Cider Press Finish.

I have customer who just bought a new cedar cider press. It came with a can of John Boo's Gel polyurethane and gave him instructions to apply a food safe wood sealer before application of the poly. So now I'm trying to find what is considered a food safe wood sealer that can go under this stuff. He's keeping this thing outside on a shaded carport but the poly they gave him clearly states that it's interior only. Normally I'd immediately think of a thinned shellac for a food safe sealer but I know shellac isn't going to last long outside either. I'm not really sure what product to point him toward at this point. Tung oil maybe? Of course Old Masters can't tell me if there Tung Oil is food safe or not. Any input is appreciated.

Salad bowl sealer.

I'm not sure about boiled linseed oil, it might be food safe. I think I'd contact boo's and see what they have to say. Its their product that has to be compatible with whatever you use.

I find it difficult to believe the poly is food safe

Mineral oil is
Linseed might be

I think that's mineral oil

I sure as ...heck...wouldn't put poly over that

Re: Cider Press Finish.

From what I've been able to learn so far unboiled linseed, tung oil, and mineral oil are safe as well as paraffin wax. I've seen some places say that almost all of these finishes such as Polyurethane are food safe once they are cured. That meaning you can't ingest the poly but surface contact with the food is safe. I'll try to get a hold of boos today and see what they say.

Thanks for the input.

check out butcher block sealer- i wouldnt even consider linseed oil-thats a very bad idea if this press is going to be used- also promotes mildew growth.
As far as interior/exterior if it is sheltered from direct sunlight I would not be concerned, however it must be kept in a "dry" area to avoid mildew/algae from growing and causing a health hazard

Re: Cider Press Finish.

The customer finally came back in and decided he didn't care too much about the food safe aspect of it. He ended up just using a regular varnish on it and forgetting the poly that came with it.
