Changes in contract agreement

I have a contract to paint a housing development for a customer. Though it was not explicitly stated in the agreement it was understand that the terms of payment were on a building by building basis. I would be the last contractor in to complete painting, receive final payment for completed work on forthnightly valuations and retentions paid after 1 month.

The situation has now changed where they want me to work on a phased basis because of other contractor issues which now requires me to revisit each building at least twice and this I know will impact on my costs. It also affects when retensions are paid since completion times are much longer. My questions are, am I obligated to agree to this change as it was not spelt out in the agreement? What are my options? Additional billing is out of the question at this time.

What was "explicitly stated" in your contract, not "understood"?

Welp, there goes my answer--

in my contracts it states "any changes or variations from the original contract will require a new contract"....not my exact wording, but you get the point.

charging more is the only option in my eyes, seems like you didn't cover your butt
