Chain Link Fence Painting - Material???

ok, i have been having some trouble specifying a material to paint chain link fence. I don't need to know an application method.

I just need a material that has the following:
1) single component
2) dry in a reasonable amount of time
3) stick to galvanized chain link
4) Be a rust inhibitor
5) be less than $30.00 per gallon
6) single coat coverage
7) not silverbrite
8) meet the Ohio VOC regulations for 2009

An estimator that works with me lost a job because a SW rep told him one thing and an ICI rep told him the exact opposite. You look stupid if you change your spec after the quote is submitted.

I have painted miles of fencing and dont want to use ICI Devguard 4308-9020 again. its getting too pricy. Plus with the new VOC regulations in Ohio I dont even think that the 4308 will be sold anymore.

any help would be appriciated.

Re: Chain Link Fence Painting - Material???

I could get just what you need but I'm in Virginia and the company that makes it is a local Virginia company. I'm not sure if I could get them to ship to you. Depend on the quantity you need. Davis Frost just started making a brilliant aluminum paint based out of their acrylic DTM formulation. It'll stick to galvanized metal fine, it's low VOC (I'd have to check on your exact VOC regulations), dries fast, and does have some rust inhibitive properties. This is designed as an acrylic roof paint. The original product it was based on is designed for appliaction to rail cars. It's tough stuff. I'd have to check pricing on it but based on the DTM I sell, I'm sure I could get it for you for under $30 a gallon. The main problem is, that there aren't likely to be any dealers for this brand in your area. I could check and see who it closest to you if you want to avoid ordering the product and having it shipped in. Let me know if you want more info on the product. I'll see if I can get a hold of a PDS sheet for you.

Edit:
I looked into. There are dealer in Ohio for this product but they all seem to be clustered around Cincinnati.

SW DTM Wash Primer ,sprayone coat (will neutralize the galvy)

SW Industrial Enamel ,spray two coats

Get ready for alot of overspray and cover from head to toe.

I like the IE over DTM because of the low temp dry times.

I am looking for a one step process. it would cost 3x as much as a product that can cover in a single application. Plus, the SW Industrial Enamel does not meet the new VOC regulations for Ohio in 2009.

For less than $30 a gallon? Let me know when you find it.

I get Devflex, Metalatex, Industrial Enamel, All Surface Enamel, DTM all for under $30 but they don't inhibit rust.

i think i might try the acrylic silverbirte product that a guy suggested at the beginning of this post. But I still have to price it out.

Do it on the weekend. That should solve most of the beaurocracy.

Your not painting the white house.

Re: Chain Link Fence Painting - Material???

I've gotten some tentative pricing on the Davis product. It isn't pretty. Will probalby run you mid 40s unless you have some serious quantity. That may change as they put it into full scale production. The binders and the sheer amount of aluminum paste this company uses in the product make it a bit pricier than their normal DTM.

Try sw DTM primer finish. Rust inhibitive and should be able to get under $30. Pretty sure it fits in the new voc regulations.

I take it you've never sprayed chain link before ...... get your weenie roller out for 5000 ft of fence???? Plus it gives you better coverage. Not a waste of product or time if you know how to price it correctly.
