Chain Link Fence

I was wondering if anyone has painted a chain link fence. I was contacted today to bid painting of a baseball back stop. Years ago I sprayed tennis court fence and it was a nightmare. Thanks for any suggestions Robert

Re: Chain Link Fence

I have a 4' chain link that also needs to be painted. I spoke with a painter and he said a thick nap roller is what he uses. I haven't gotten to the point of figuring out what to use, etc, but the roller made sense. I'm anxious to hear the other replies.

Re: Chain Link Fence

I did it twice, the first time I used a long knapp roller and a brush. Not easy and had to go back and touch up quite a bit. The second time I got a little smarter. I used an airless to spray the poles and top rail, along with teh fence a few inches on either of the poles, as well as the bottom 6" or so of the fence (I sprayed at an angle down towards a piece of cardboard.) That way I did it in about a third the time, and the sprayer cut in everything, all I had to do was roll the middles. I used a big piece of cardboard as a backdrop when spraying to keep the overspray down, and slid it under the fence as I sprayed the bottom 6", and when I rolled it to keep the roller out of the grass. (I didn't figure that one out right away, had to pick grass out of the paint a couple times before I caught on)

How do you do the bottom of the "U"s in " YOU!" with a brush?

I just assumed that's what you were painting on that High School fence

" YOU!"

I could never get the bottoms of the "U"s to look right with a brush

Re: Chain Link Fence

I have painted chain link before... this is how I did it...

used 6 mil. plastic and ran it under the fence about 3' on each side to protect the grass... some areas I had to dig an inch or so...

Used an HVLP to spray...minimal over spray floating through the air... had one guy hold an old drop up on the other side...it gets thrown out after...

when we are done one side we switch and do the other...

I have also used a peice of plywood... but I think the drop works better...

Used a brush to brush the bottoms of the poles....

after we were done we cut the plastic down the middle and removed it from each side...

If you dont have an HVLP use your airless with a finish tip on low pressure...

I personally think this is a better system than rolling...and much faster!

Rolling you cant get all the way to the ground.. and it seems like more of a mess.... just my opinion...

Re: Chain Link Fence

I have never painted chain link fence. But would think electrostatics painting
Would be your best choice. There would be alot less overspray.
