Ceiling Painting

Starting a job and would like to get couple of professional opinions.
Painting the ceiling in all rooms in a house that has no furniture in it. I thought maybe spraying the ceilings. My main concern is not having the streaks in the ceiling. Recommend a good ceiling paint. Someone told me the SW promar 200 white is good paint for ceiling.

Thanks

Re: Ceiling Painting

Spraying all depends on if the walls are being painted too... and if the floors need covering...outlet's.. tops of baseboard... cabinets... heaters... doors...stairs/railings... etc etc... if its "just" the ceilings... I would cut and roll... by the time you get done masking and protecting everything that cant get oversprayed...(A LOT of over spray falls to the floor when spraying)... you will have the ceilings almost complete...

Im not a fan of SW...

I use Benjamin Moore & California's Ceiling White... Manor Hall...

If you dont want "lines" make sure you have the right tip and pressure... and I would recommend to back roll...

Re: Ceiling Painting

If ceilings are smooth you should backroll. Textured, I wouldn't worry about it.

...and, if the ceilings are "popcorn" you've got to spray. If you spray, mask, mask, then mask some more.

Re: Ceiling Painting

But you pretty much have to drape everything anyway when you roll. We just tape 1.5 mil plastic to the crown, or walls next to the ceiling then pull it out to drape everything. For flat ceilings we spray heavy (Pro Mar 200) then backroll, for textured just spray. Don't know how many ceilings you're talking, but me and two guys can drape and spray alot of ceiling space in a day.

I agree. Promar is what I use on all ceilings...unless it's a rental, then it gets master hide.

Re: Ceiling Painting

I don't use it personally, but have used it on others' jobs. It does what it says, Builds out high, as in a thick coating that dries nice and is easy to touch up, beyond that, it's definaltley produced with the contactor in mind.

I've painted over it before and found it to be an unpredictable base coat.

Personally I like to use the same paint that Michealangello used on the Cistene Chapel...

Cut and roll Muresco... However if it's "Dune White"? then you're doing two coats for sure - doh!....
Not to complain about BM's colour or anything, but I'm not impressed.

It was ceiling white tinted to the colour cc70 or Dune white. That was the trim colour, so the designer got the bright idea of convincing the HO that the ceiling should be the same...

Re: Ceiling Painting

200 is a good choice. For $12 a gallon I think it's great. However to those who say no need to backroll when spraying, I'd still give it a good look over the next day. I've noticed it likes to crack up sometimes without a backroll.

If you're only doing ceilings, cut & roll would probably be alot faster. It's flat so it's pretty easy to get a smooth finish. An 18" will make it even easier.

Re: Ceiling Painting

Cut and roll it--it's faster and easier in an occupied home
...or does 'no furniture' mean new construction?

Muresco or Masterhide are what I usually use
