Ceiling Crack
I have a customer who has had a crack in the ceiling for 2 yrs now and claims that it has not crack anymore than it is already. I would say that the crack is about a little less that 1/8" and runs about 20 ft long. Will removing the popcorn from ceiling about 4-6" on each side of the crack good idea? tape and mud, then popcorn ceiling application the most effective or can i just fill in the crack joint compound?
Or any suggestion to most economical yet effective way would be appreciated. |

Re: Ceiling Crack
I recommend taping and mudding, then spraying...its tough to get a flawless finish short of scraping the entire ceiling.

Re: Ceiling Crack
you will also want to find the studs and put some screws in personally I use about 4 on each stud about 1 inch and 5 inches out from the crack on both sides..then tape, mud, texture etc.

Re: Ceiling Crack
exactly what those guys said...I specialize in ceiling repair.
I would also put a bead of caulk in the crack before you mudd if there is a high traffic area above... or if the house is only a few years old... due to more settling ...sometimes I find that helps with the movement and bonds with some elasticity, to prevent recracking. I repair alot of ceilings and I never promice that the crack wont return... I just explain that I will fix it a second time for free... repair only.. not repaint. Lots of factors in why ceilings crack... and you can't control them all. I would have to say from my experience that the area between the bottom of an exterior window and above a electric heater will crack more often.. and recrack... the worst I've ever seen was fixed 6 times but there was an outlet there also. |

Re: Ceiling Crack
I had a repair just before christmas the homeowner had 2 other companies come in to fix, the thing is they both used mesh tape and used joint compound out of a 5, I told them that if these guys would have used the right product they wouldn't have to have the ceiling fixed again, use straighflex tape it is the best way to go, also use Durabond 45 in the brown bags then texture.
