Cedar Wood Stained -

I rarely come across these types of wood to paint, but if it stained, can i go over with an acrylic latex paint?

Re: Cedar Wood Stained -

I painted a stained cedar house last Summer.
Primed first w/BM Fresh Start (alkyd), then painted w/BM Moorlife flat acrylic.

I assume since I haven't heard from their attorney, that the paint's still on.

I do a good 5 -8 homes a season with solid color stain, all homes are all ready coated with solid so its a wash then prep and two coats and there good to go for another 6 -8 yrs.

He wants to paint it though, Mak.

Which he can do, as long as he primes it w/a tannin blocker.

I'm assuming you don't mean latex solid color stain. Because I believe the oils would come through that, just like the paint.

If i decide to paint, its an oil prime, and acrylic latex topcoat right? Now if we decide to do the stain again. How does the process change?

The homes in the Chicago area (at least the hoods I am working in) are built with cedar and with acrylic stain form the git go(usually factory applied).. We don't have the rustic look here. So the cedar was primed and coated prior to be re coating them. Why would I take the step to prime when it has solid acrylic on them all ready.

Now i the original post if it is semi oil on there then yes I would prime and top coat with either oil solid or acrylic.

Yes if you wish to have a painted look, then oil prime and acrylic solid color stain. I know a lot of guys like to put satin finish or semi gloss on exteriors but I think that looks terrible or cedar. Is it rough or smooth cedar?

You wouldn't.

I read the original post as being from someone that had (oil base) stained cedar, that they wanted to paint.

Re: Cedar Wood Stained -

The wood is very rough and it runs vertical . maybe 5-6" boards with a 1" space inbetween, then the next board. Could i just go over with another color stain or that wont work?

You should have no problem, oil priming and solid color in either oil or acrylic

Re: Cedar Wood Stained -

If you decide to use semi transparent (oil) stain...then DON'T prime it.

Yes, it looks like the 1 all the way to the left. But its rough, you can see the knots on the wood.

Im getting conflicting processes here!

Re: Cedar Wood Stained -

What is the final appearance that you or the clients wants? If its a solid look the oil prime and acrylic top coat. If you want the semi transparent look then no prime and use a semi transparent stain after cleaning but a color change with semi may not work w/o removing most of the current product

Re: Cedar Wood Stained -

Not you're not, Plaza.

If it now looks like the one on the left (drop channel), then to paint it w/acrylic latex, you'll need to prime it with an oil base/tannin blocking primer first.

Sorry if Mak confused you.

Plaza there is not much difference in a solid stain and a flat paint sorry if solid color stain is what is confusing.

BTW Mak.. I was only kidding about you being the one that caused the confusion.

I usually just keep quiet around here, but lately I've become a little embarrassed about my low post count.
