Cedar Stains

I would like to know whats the difference between translucent stains and solid color stains. I have a cedar home to paint soon and the customer wants me to pick out the stain. Any benifits in using one over the other? Thanks for your responses.

Re: Cedar Stains

IMHO, clear stains reveal more of the character of the wood. Some solid stains are so opaque that they resemble paint and some even have a 'plastic' look. There is everything in between.

I'd do some samples for approval before starting the job.

Re: Cedar Stains

Clear stains will not keep the wood from turning grey or silvery. Only the tinted stains.

Re: Cedar Stains

Thanks guys. The house sits right on a lake and is a bit weathed so I'm leaning towards the solid. Also, there is a bit of mold here and there. I'm going to powerwash but is there a product you can recommend to neutralize the mold? Thanks again

Re: Cedar Stains

You want to use something other than a clear. The clears don't have any UV protection in them. Try a semi-transparent stain like Ready Seal. It has all the right stuff in a number of color choices, except the clear.

Re: Cedar Stains

For mold and mildew, try Jomax with bleach added per directions on the container!
