Cedar Siding

Just wondering what others would use for new Cedar siding and shakes? Would a coat of A-100 oil primer and then 2 coats of Woodscapes be acceptable? Just wondering what others would use for New Cedar siding?

Re: Cedar Siding

Unless the shakes are back primed, don't paint them at all. Use a semi transparent stain so it can breath.

Every painted cedar shake I've ever come across seams to rot the shingle out after about 6-7 years. You cant re-paint or fix it either. It always needs full replacement.

Re: Cedar Siding

That is the problem. The contractor i got the job thru, is doing the siding and i told him that it needs to be back primed first or there will be problems in the future. He said the Insurance company is not covering that. So i was just trying to get opinions on what others would use for a job like this?

Re: Cedar Siding

If you have to put a solid coating on it use Sikkens Rubbol Siding Finish. It's their newer acrylic formulation of their solid stain. They always seem to recommend this product when cedar is involved and a solid coating is desired. You may still have problem with it in the future but I'll wager it'll outlast any other solid coating, like paint, that you could put on it.
