Cedar Shake Exterior: Paint v. Stain

Hi,

We're painting our turn of the century home in New England.
Currently, house has
-Cedar Shake shingles, of which many will need to be replaced
-Dark brown oil stain (alligatoring badly) on house body
-Off white trim (peeling badly).

So, need best practices/thoughts on:

1-Given we have stained shingles, what's best practice for new coating, stain or paint? Pros/Cons to either approach?
2-Since at least a 3rd of the shingles need replaced (don't ask), should the primer be different on the new wood as opposed to the treated shingles?
3a-If we go the stain route, what type of primer & stain (oil, latex) is best practice?
3b-Also, we have a choice between Ben Moore & Cabot stain, any recommendations?
4a-For trim (and painting route), we're considering Ben Moor-Guard or Aura. Is there a specific difference in quality (or is it just marketing hype)? Is it worth the cost offset?

Thanks in advance...

If it was me ... I would use a latex stain. Make sure the new shingles are sealed on all sides BEFORE they are replaced.

Latex stain will hold up better and will look better. Plus it is A LOT easier to work with.

If the previous coats of stain are alligatoring badly you may want to sand really good and apply a complete coat of oil base primer. Then either use latex stain or latex satin paint.
