Cedar Re Paints

How often would most of you let an exterior cedar house go? I have one I did 6 yrs ago it doesn't look that bad, a little dirt, little fade here and there mostly on shutters and doors where Accent color was used.

When I did it was two coats of BM's exterior solid color stain to match an existing Olympic color. They put an addition on so they wanted me to come and do just that at first. I talked them into doing the hole house as I thought the add on would look great and make the rest of the house look more faded etc. Well anyway I am doing the whole house (new color now) but HO has friends and family say that the whole thing shouldn't be done and blah blah blah pretty much saying I am just trying to get more work out of the job.

Just thought I would throw this out there. I know a lot products promise longevity but do they really pan out that way? I am in Chicago area so hot cold hot etc.. snow rain and everything in between.

7 yrs. is about the most you can expect out of stain. It's not going to get any better.

It's always better to maintain a good job with a fresh coat than to completley restore the exterior every time.

Re: Cedar Re Paints

Six years in our climate is good performance, dirt and fading are to be expected.

like you said if the addition was stained the same color, after 6 years it would stick out like a sore thumb.

If the client wants a new exterior color than the above points are moot. You could stain the addition the original color, but we both now after 6 years it won't match, and if they go with a new color, everything has to be done.

Re: Cedar Re Paints

Agree with all the above. For one coat cedar condo exterior, we are on a 5-6 year rotation.

Thanks for all the replys I tell my customers 6-8 years and if you think it needs to be done next year do it this year. It is easier and cheaper with less prep.

Re: Cedar Re Paints

You get more years on verticle than horizontal when it comes to stain so I would say about the same with the top end products pushing about 12. That is if it is maintained properly, but fading does come into play. You should tell them the truth that you can and will do as they want, but no matter what, the addition color can be the same paint, but due to the rest being faded it will not match. They new stain will look richer and have true color verses the old stuff. Also, make them know that all paint formulas are updated to become better suited for the need and that the newer formulas also mess with the colors. It is better to just do a re application every 5 or 6 years as to not let things creep up on the house because color fading is nothing compared to wood rot. Explain to them that paint is not only for the look, but it is there to protect against the climate.
