Cat urine has ruined doors
nother strange one - what a week!
ok this house has doors with a faux wood laminate, factory painted white - 6 panel. well their cats (14 of them) have sprayed over the years and the bottoms edges have all warped out. I am foing to shave off all the stuff sticking out and paint them. Is there any kind of finish that will help protect against this uric acid any better? They do cat rescue so the cats are there to stay...oy vay! help me rescue these doors!
Is 75.00 a door to repair and paint both sides too much to ask?

I don't paint, but I can well imagine the smell and the conditions in that house. I'd say about $10,000 per door would cover the pain and suffering.

A 2-part epoxy will be much more durable. We paint public toilet stalls and shower rooms with it, and it is virtually bullet proof. But cat piss and diet coke are very powerful chemicals, they might just eat through it.

Two part epoxy is a type of paint. It comes in many flavors from the different manufacturers. Just tell your local store you want their best epoxy and they'll set you right up.
Don't ignore the labels though. Pay attention to "pot life" (amount of time for use after mixing), which can be as short as only an hour for some epoxies.

We use Pratt & Lambert PalGard Epoxy. Smells horrible, but does the job. I suggest major ventilation, and the customer should scram until the job is over.
P.S. This paint is volatile enough to kill parakeets in cages in other rooms. Don't ask.
PPS I hope wild blue is a female, as the term 'hunny' made the hair on my neck stand up.

Before quoting prices, you may want to check out the cost of the paint. The stuff that I use goes about $70 a gallon + $40 for hardener + $20 for spray/brushing reducer. You are also going to want a good respirator, NOT particle mask and you should avoid any contact with the product, meaning gloves and (if spraying) a tyvek suit, hood and goggles.

The doors could be replaced for the amount of money you are talking about. The door slabs go for about $30 to $40 and take less than an hour to route hinges and bore for lock. Just an option.

Not that this has anything to do with painting, but my when my neighbor moved into his house, apparently the former owner fed the local cats by letting them into his garage. Well, my neighbor tried cleaning the floor with all sorts of stuff, painting it twice, re-rocking the garage to no avail. The smell lingered. He finally gave up and had the floor broken up and re-poured

It has been my experience that Zinser and Bin will seal just about anything. From the smell of rotting old people in an apartment to fire damage to animal smells. Zinser being the 1st and best choice.

I used kilz on my floor no problems yet. Also there is a product that kills the ammonia crystals. It's about 25 bucks a pint. Sold by vets and pet supply stores.

I've got 8 cats. All strays, all fixed, all declawed no urine anywhere but in thier boxes. I am also involved with an animal rescue group. They keep all thier feral cats in outdoor colonies. I can tell you this; Cats can smell urine no matter what chemical you use to cover it up with. I vote to replace doors with ones less porous. Then the door owners need to show the little cats that the big cats own the house.

You got that right. I once went to a house to replace a front entry door that was "rusting away". When i got there and they opened the door...GOOD GOD I got the dry heaves in front of the customer . Seems the cats were just pissing on the front door instead of going outside. It was all soaked in the carpet. Funny thing was the house was immaculate except for the piss odor. They relaced the door with a $1000 oak one and I pulled my shirt up over my face as a gas mask when I was working.
