Re: Casement Window Stripping And Deck Wash

Yes, there is a better way. What kind of finish is it? You'll need to strip the old finish before applying a new one. Depending on what the old finish looks like clear might not be the best option. Is it a solid stain that's on there now? Anyway, get a professional strength stripper and brightener/nuetralizer. Apply the stripper, let dwell (and keep wet) for 15 mins. Pressure wash (I say the term lightly) with 800-1200 psi MAX, nothing more or you'll be digging into the wood way too much. If it comes up, you're in good shape, if not, it will take multiple applications of the stripper, which is not cheap. You'll need to do a test before placing a bid on this job though. If it takes two or three applications to strip the old finish your costs will be much higher. Once you've stripped it rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. Then apply the brightener....it's a vital step. The brighteners, which are usually citric or oxacilic acid, nuetralize the caustic stripper. Let that dwell for 15 mins at least and then rinse, rinse, and rinse again for good measure. You'll want to at least wear rubber boots (stripper makes decks SLIPPPPERY), goggles, a respirator while applying chemicals, and some rubber gloves. (anything overhead requires a good full body rainsuit) The chemicals are serious business, you'll need to protect all plants nearby, and protect yourself. Keep the stripper off painted surfaces you don't want stripped, or at least wet those areas and keep them wet with water while stripping, it will remove paint.

There is so much more I could tell you. Wood restoration is fun stuff, but not something to take lightly. Just power washing with a ton of pressure and bleach is not the way to go, like a lot of people tend to do. They wash it down with bleach and stain over the old stuff.

Here's a couple places to go for stripper, brighteners, and wood care in general. http://www.deckguide.com and http://www.sunbritesupply.com

Ooo..how many windows?
With those panes and all
Yeeeeeeeaahh....that's going to be a joy
Of course I'm picturing old moldy deteriorating ones, maybe it wont be so bad
I don't care for chemicals
I'd probably do it by hand
If it was a lot I'd probably go UV

Cabots Problem Solvers

You could probably go from stripper to brightener and skip the cleaner depending on how it comes out

But the stripper does have to be neutralized before staining, and I like to "brighten" before applying any light stains anyway

I apply with a hand sprayer and power wash off

Try this to strip the windows....

http://www.ready-strip.com/Pages/readystripPRO-PD.html

Your customer will love that it is inviromentally freindly...

I use it all the time and it works great!!! (It spray's good too with the right sprayer and tip)

Apply it and let it set over night...

Make sure it is the pro version or higher... the standard Ready Strip (green) dont work as well...

go to www.readystrip.com to look at other options...

My paint suppliers stock it... I think Home Depot does to....

Hey JGMP, I've heard good things about ready strip, but I haven't had a chance to use it....I think I'm going to try that out next time around!
