California Paints
One of my paints stores that I buy from now sells California paints, I would like to try this new line, looked back at an old thread about this paint 06 time frame. Does anybody use the line? What do you think about it. I would like to try the 2010 super-scrub and their velvet-flat products. Do you like the products for walls, ceilings, and trim-doors.
Thanks for any input. |

Re: California Paints
I haven't actually used it but from all I've heard from those that have, California is an excellent paint.

The 2010 line is great. It hides well and levels well.It is the most scrubable acrylic paint I have ever used.I use it on trim doors and walls.

Re: California Paints
I have used their exterior 2010 products and like them. Not quite as smooth as the Graham exterior products, but thicker. I am lately leaning towards 2010 for my house siding and trim if I need exterior paint, not solid stain and sticking with the Graham's for ext. doors.

Re: California Paints
First, California Products is NOT from that great western state, but from this state, Massachussets, started (I was once told) on California St in Newton. Then moved to Cambridge and is now in a "state of the art" facility in Andover Ma.
Back in the mid seventies I saw a lot of exterior work with "California" signs out front. Me and my partner scoffed at those college kids using crap from the West coast, "What do people in California know about New England weather" Boy were we WRONG In 1989-90 I managed a small Mom&Pop that sold California and had my erroneous perceptions corrected. California was one of the first to develop and market 100% Acrylic paints. This quote from their website, "In the early 1950's, recognizing that oil paints of the day were prone to peeling and fading, California Products become a pioneer in the field of latex house paints, working with the new acrylic emulsion binders that were being produced at the time. " Around 1990 they became employee owned, and I did notice a marked difference (for the better) in customer service and satisfaction. Although, as with every coatings manufacturer, they have some bad broducts, in general they are TOP quality. (I do NOT like their Storm Stain - others love it) Having dropped painting and now only wallpapering, I have not used their 2010 line but have heard good things about it. California has always been inovators. While still painting, I was most satisfied with their interior coatings. (I was still using BM oil on exteriors) Check out California Paints website: http://www.californiapaints.com/ or the parent company, California Products: http://www.calprocorp.com/ |

Re: California Paints
I was told that the founders moved from California to the east coast and started making paint and that people referred it as "that California paint" and the name stuck.

Re: California Paints
I'm using there oil now. Even meets the new VOC laws of New England. Dont use the scrubbable matte on ceilings though. Just painted out one another painter did by order of the owner. It does flash.
Good stuff though. |

Re: California Paints
I emailed California Products about origin of the name. Here's the official company response (mis-spellings and all):
California Paints was originally a franchisee if the California Stucco Co. We were called California Stucco Products of New England. We perfected 100% acrylic coatings while everyone else was still selling oil based paints. The acrylics are the best for stucco/masonry. As our paint business grew and the stucco business in the northeast diminished, we sold off the stucco division and registered California Paints as our trade name. |
