Bubbleing Paper After Paint

This has happened to me twice in a week and I'm not sure what's going wrong or how to fix it. These are wallpaper removal and paint. Heres the process:
  1. I tear off the old paper
  2. We then sand the walls down to get them as smooth as possible.
  3. We then prime all the walls with Prep Rite oil primer.
  4. Then sand the walls really good.
  5. Then patch the walls where the sheetrock tore up upon removing the paper.
  6. Then sand all the patches
  7. Then apply 2 coats finish

Ok, not all the walls bubble where the sheetrock tore a little on wallpaper removal. And some of the bubbles shrink back to normal once it dries. I thought that by primeing everything with flat oil I would avoid these type problems, I really am not sure what to do to remedy this happening. What we've had to do on this jobs lately is cut the bubbles out with a razor, repatch, and touch up, then they dont bubble. Any insight is appreciated, does anyone recommend a primer other than the oil...will it hold up and sand as well as oil?

Re: Bubbleing Paper After Paint

Most likely is the paper layer of drywall pulled away from the gypsum layer, and the oil didn't penetrate enough to seal or bond it back together. I would suggest using Gardz on all the torn drywall, or any removal for that matter. It penetrates a lot more than oil will.

How to fix it, at this point, you can only cut out the bubbles as you see them. I wouldn't trust the ones that pulled back tight either. A rise in humidity could make them pop back up down the road.

I have used kilz on many occasions with great success.

I would eliminate steps 3 & 4 and add a coat of primer between 6 & 7.

I've had that happen to me before. Now we try to anticipate any bubbles. We double check the wall with our utility knives and try to cut out any loose "brown" drywall paper before we patch and prime.

Re: Bubbleing Paper After Paint

I could be off here, but you may have some of the glue adheasive left behind from the wallpaper. no matter how much you prime or paint, it will bubble in just those area's. Lets start off the correct way... if the paper comes off easy then you can just pull or scrape, if not, take a outdoor bug sprayer fill 1/2 with the hottest water possible, 1/2 liquid fabric softener..even the cheep stuff from the dollar store will work. you don't have to score it because it will pull off in full sheets if you do this correctly. spray the ceiling line with lots of softener and then the wall , let sit for a few minutes ( start the next wall ) then go back and spray again... let it work it's way behind the paper.. the longer it sits , the easier it comes off... When the paper is off... YOU STILL HAVE A LAYER OF ADHEASIVE left on the wall... just removing the paper is not enough.
repeat the spray steps a few times soaking the wall from top to bottom.. letting the softener do the work.. then just scape across with wide puddy knife.... should come off like hot butter. Then wipe down the wall and begin to prime / paint. Doing this method also causes less marks in the wall from trying to carve the paper off. leaving less mudding/ fixing.

P.S if paper is super difficult... (many layers) you can use gel wallpaper remover (diff is recomended) score wall, smear gel from top to bottom and then coat with a layer of plastic. let stand over night. The plastic keeps the formular from drying. So it will realy work it's magic.

And the prize goes to...Doctor Prowall

Guardz is meant to fix this exact problem.

Glue residue has different symptoms.

I use Kelly's way, I like it when it just falls off in big sheets. Mop off the glue with a car wash sponge, and hit with a shellac primer.

Pulling the paper on the sheetrock apart doesn't do anyone any good. You can wait a few extra min's. or patch divots. IME, patching takes longer than waiting, you can do something else while waiting.

Re: Bubbleing Paper After Paint

This problem starts when the wallpaper is stripped. When stripping the wallpaper you should pull it down instead of pulling out. By pulling it straight out you're pulling at the drywall much more then by pulling straight down. It can actually delaminate from the gypsum core without damaging the surface of the drywall.

After stripping you can usually run your hand over the surface and listen for the loose spots. It sounds the same as running your hand over one of those loose nail pops (kinda hollow). If you find one, cut it out. I'm not sure but i doubt if Gaurdz would penetrate through the bubble if there's much primer or paint on the drywall.

Since we started striiping down instead of out we don't have much trouble with bubbles anymore. We love the Gaurdz for torn drywall and for suspicious previous coatings.

I hope the "stripping down" thing makes sense.
