Bloodwood Stain....or Something Close To Bloodwood

I was wondering if any company made a bloodwood stain. I have about 3000+/- board feet of pine that I need to stain. I would like it to be close to a bloodwood color.
Thanks
Adam

Sherwin Williams will color match a stain in my neck of the woods for $50.00. Find a scrap of bloodwood somewhere and they'll monkey with the stain for a day or two until they get it right, or you tell 'em to do it again.

All that soft pine. You probably will want to use a toner/sealer before staining to bring the color out more evenly. I was pretty happy with the alcohol based zinser sealer; and not just because I forgot to wear my mask when I sprayed it! Really added a nice shimmer and depth to the stain too.

Sounds nice, I have never seen it before. Another thing I need to Google.

I have never had SW match a stain for me, but ICI will do it for free, if I was an SW customer and they told me it would be $50 I would tell them they just lost my business.

I think the fee is totally reasonable. It's not like a paint where they shoot it with the eye, adjust and shoot the bucket. They generally go through a couple cans trying to match it right and they really take their time. I wouldn't expect a client to come to me and ask me to paint two walls, twice, to see if they liked the color for free. Fair's fair.

Terrible analogy, SW is selling you product, you know if the stain is the correct color you are buying it, I would tell SW to stick it if they tried to charge me.

I could see them maybe trying to charge an HO or someone who usually shops somewhere else, but if you are a regular SW customer and they come at you with a $50 matching fee then there is something wrong. I would definetly want to speak to my sales rep.

My MLC distributor will match for free.

You will probably want to go with a dye for the stain, or a stain with mostly dyes in it. Cordovan Red [dye] will give you a close match, Also referred as OxBlood Stain.

All color matches are done with the color eye already, if they have to go through a couple of cans then they are idiots.
When I worked at one back in the 90's my Boss could nail a color within 2 moves, and that was before the color eye BS and we had to pump the tint into each can by hand.
Also SW pays about $4.00 per gallon of their finest schwill, you don't need to worry about them losing money.

Re: Bloodwood Stain....or Something Close To Bloodwood

Matching paint colors are a lot easier than matching stain colors. The guy doing the matching needs to know a lot of different things before he can drum up a color. Was it a one step, 2 step, 3 step process on the original color? Was there a toner, a shading agent, is it a dye or a pigment? How will it look in different lighting, fluorescent, incandescent, sun, mixed? It can look perfect in one and totally off under another. I am actually surprised that my distributor does it for free. Sometimes it takes a few tries before it comes out just right. Time is money, it is not the materials, it is the time invested.

Re: Bloodwood Stain....or Something Close To Bloodwood

I managed a paint store for 14 years, I charged $25 for a stain match, paint matches were free. It sometimes would take a day or two to get the stain just right, so the $25 was a bargain imho.

not sure what color bloodwood is, but Mohawk makes an Oxblood dye stain that is a strong red.
