Best Way To Paint Over Glue From Vinyl Wrapped Doors.

Remodeling a kitchen where the wrapped doors are buckling and coming loose. A few have torn. Vinyl skin comes off easy but red glue remains behind. I was thinking of using Zinnser 123 as a primer sealer. I tried a few chemicals I had and nothing touched the glue. Sanding only makes a sticky, heat activated mess.
Thanks for any ideas.

Steve,

categorically I would not paint over any kind of glue, paste, or other adhesive.

You say "Vinyl skin". Is this a laminate or a wallpaper type of material ?

If a laminate, you need to find the adhesive's solvent. Have you tried them all? Laquer thinner? MEK ? Alcohol ? Carbon Tech ? etc etc ?

If it is a wallcovering type of product it sounds like it was not installed with a "normal" paste but a polymer based product like Border Adhesive or Vinyl over Vinyl (VOV). These do not "dissolve" with normal wallpaper removal solutions. BUT Safe & Simple of Pasedena makes #826 which was formulated to cut through VOV and help with removal

The stuff is expensive and you probably don't need a whole lot. Mike Zekich (president) is a super guy and always willing to help.

Good luck with this.

That was my first thought too.....

Your remodeling the kitchen?......not gonna replace the doors? You say they are warped and falling apart. I believe I would replace them before I tried repairing them if it's that much of a problem.

Maybe I did not make myself clear on the job. New tile on floors, paint room and trim, granite counter tops, under counter lighting, and paint the cabinets. The doors are MDF cathedral design routed into them. The vinyl membrane is heated and glued to the MDF. I call the vinyl wrapped. The vinyl forms to the MDF pattern through the process Welborn Cabinets uses. The doors are not cracked or chipped. Homeowner wants new hardware and I am replacing the 32MM hinges as many are worn out. Easy job as my supplier has the same one's that go back with no mods. The door problem is the glue is failing and the vinyl membrane is turning loose. Either at the edges or a bubble in the center of the panel. There are 48 doors so replacing them would drive the cost way up where as painting the MDF after the membrane and glue are removed would be a manageable cost.

I had a couple cabinet doors like that fail. We scrubbed off the adhesive with lacquer thinner. Sanded, and primed with a long oil primer.
