Best Way To Paint Interior Decorative Posts?

I have 8 interior decorative posts to paint. The posts presently exist in the customer's home. The posts / polls are about 1.5 feet in diameter and are about 8 ft tall. Like small trees with a big trunk. The posts presently have semi gloss paint (latex) on them. I will be painting them with high gloss white paint.

Without using a sprayer, what is the best way to paint these babies??

Is it best to roll these posts with a 3 to 4 inch roller, 1/4 nap?. If so, roll up and down or side to side??

Or is it best to just paint with a brush?

I have never done these before.

I know you can buy a bendable sleeve that wraps around polls...but the naps are usually 1/2 inch. I'm not sure if these really work.

Any assistance or ideas would be helpful.

Thanks guys.

FAST is the short answer.

Take some glycerin or Floetrol and put in your latex to slow drying, turn down air conditioning, and anything else that will slow it down enough.

Start at the tops and roll them up and down and brush out real fast. DON'T brush out the top rolled part all of the way until you roll into it with the lower half. IOW, when you brush it out, leave about 3-4" or JUST ROLLED paint unbrushed and then roll out the bottoms and brush it into to the top in a sweeping-lifting motion.

Think about what you are doing FIRST. the key here is to have the whole post or columns wet from top to bottom if possible. IOW, if they take you longer than 10 minutes each, you are probably going to get into trouble. Done right, they will dry close to an oil finish.

Do them slow or wrong and fogettaboutit!

I just painted cabinets with a foam roller. I never got such a beautiful finish as I did with them. Good Luck.

Charlie,

I would say that would be a possible option, with the key still being to NEVER have a dry or drying/tacky edge anywhere around the columns, and the Floerol will help to level out the paint like oils do.

Good idea!

Commonly known as "tip and roll", ya thats the best way... do em sideways and it will look stupid.

My vote is those foam weenie rollers. Gives a great finish that kind of looks like it was sprayed. We use those on metal doors. Looks great.

for an easy to work with paint that will give an oil like shine without too much brush flash or sag try out SW 200 gloss. Its a little known product that sherwin carries that we started using instead of pro classic. (we felt that pro classic dried too fast and was difficult to work with). The down side is its not as hard as enamel so dont use it on shelves or high traffic trim.
