Ben Moore Show.... Aura Demonstations

Went to the Ben Moore show this week in Boston.
They went nuts about Aura... the new paint....
Comes in flat and eggshell so far... they set up drywall
and let us try it. these are their remarks....
Self priming... especially over drywall.
One coat coverage.. (even dark colors)
V.O.C compliant everywhere (no smell)
Mildew proof
dries in minutes.. (4 - I think)
excellent touchup

Gave us new Aura roller covers... tighter nap... 3/8 nap.
Gave us new fan decks with new aura colors.
gave us complete Aura bid package, including Aura briefcases.
Cost .... somewhere around $50 a gallon

Re: Ben Moore Show.... Aura Demonstations

1 coat coverage meaning i just roll 1 coat of this new paint over new drywall and thats it since it self priming?

If so, im switching.

We tried it last week, the matte finish. Color was Lancaster Tan over an off white. Was a accent wall in lv rm.

Went on like C2 but covered much better. Saved the labor of 2nd coat.

Has its place for sure. Goes on really nice, we used the 3/8 nap.

Re: Ben Moore Show.... Aura Demonstations

SW has the ProMar 200 XP which is supposed to be a coat system.

i tried it on a real estate flip, didnt work to well, i ended up priming all the walls then painting it. On new drywall, i think it worked well.

If it works as they claim, it would be great for new construction.

For residential repaints, i think it would be hard to sell. Most home owners like the idea of "2 coats of paint"

I hope it is not comparable to Duration Interior, or I would not consider using it!

I would say it's possibly a majority of sales calls I find myself explaining that we can't possibly guarantee quality, coverage, and color with just one coat like they would prefer (for price reasons)

I would have to say most homeowners accept the idea that it needs two coats

I would say if there were such a thing as a one-coat re-paint, it would not take much convincing of homeowners

People who can cover in 1 coat are hacks? I think it's the other way, people who can't cover in 1 coat over a similar color are the hacks [amatuers].

A lot of you on CT say you sell a repaint customer with a prime and 2 finish coats, 3 coats to do a job that most times would take 1 good coat from a person who knows how to paint?

Maybe you can rip off people in your area, or are desparate to ring up a big number for a small job, you won't get away with it around here.

I never questioned covering something in the same color. Hell, even walmart paint does that. I was assuming we we're all talking about over bare rock, since that's what is listed in the first post. That is what I'm referring to....1 coat over bare rock.

I do not sell my customers prime + 2 coats by choice. I do it because it's recommended by the manufacturers of most of the paint I use. I'm honestly not scared that "I wouldn't get away with it" around there. I'm here and people want the best. I tell them flat out that 2 coats is what the manufacturers recommend, therefore they have no choice in the matter. I decide...I am the pro, not them. Of course, some applications it is not needed to prime or do 2 coats.

All I'm saying is that 1 coat on bare rock is not ideal. I need to sleep at night.

I lean towards agreing with woz on this. The whole 2 coat idea especially for simliar colors is a way for the painting industry to make more money on there paint sales. And for contractors to make more money. I paint for complete coverage If thats one coat, two, three so on..

There are instances when 2 or more coats are required deep colors accents, wide color changes etc.. but for most repaints the walls have been painted many times prior to us getting in there and one coat is all it takes to cover most similar colors.

On the the whole aura thing is not just about the coverage it about a new low VOC tinting machine and tints, I believe they are waterborne tints, I don't believe that SW has anything like that ?? do they??

I applaud BM for trying new technology if that's what they are trying to do.

Re: Ben Moore Show.... Aura Demonstations

Nobody has anything like the Aura, C2 has a similar tinting system.
The paints are not zero VOC but low VOC.
In fact their Ecospec will likely have less VOC.

Where it gets more Eco-friendly is their Color-Lock technology
that makes it more durable, hence there are less re-paints necessary.
Less coats necessary will make it more Eco-friendly as well.

Time will tell...

Re: Ben Moore Show.... Aura Demonstations

Think I'll take a wait and see on this one especially as the dealer has to purchase a rather expensive tint machine to go with the paint. I doubt my small town Ontario BM dealer will be running out to purchase it. I applaud BM for attempting to lower the VOC's as the world is demanding it. As far as the one coat thing is concerned.....and over bare new drywall?.......hmmm I'm just not getting a good visual..... I know that you tried it at a show but what about after drying time.... what about depth of colour, what happens when it's been washed a time or two over a period of time. I got bitten well with BM's Ulti-Matt when it first came out (good thing the clients love me). Recently I tried Farrow & Ball and loved everything about it and the environment loves it too.

Cheers
Mary

One coat over bare sheetrock?

Sorry, I won't even look at it, no matter who wants to argue that a good painter can cover in one coat... that, is insane. Sheetrock has hairs just like wood, a paint brings them out, wanna tell me that I don't need to sand and can cover in one coat? Phhhfffftttttttt.
