bathroom paint

a customer just had her bathroom repainted purple. Previous painter used sherwin williams semi gloss latex. However, now the paint is reacting to the moisture in the bathroom. It has a white film over the top of it and when you shower you can wipe on the walls above the shower and it wipes some white residue off. Any thoughts on the problem/cure. I thought maybe her exhaust fan was not working well enough. Or possibly some sort of reaction from paint underneath. Sherwin williams guy said something about dark colors in a bathroom are bad because the "re wet" Never heard that before. Any suggestions? I was going to reprime and paint and maybe reccomend a better exhaust fan.

Ever see those toys that change color when you put them in water? Then they change back when dry. That's about the same effect as water on certain colors of paint, purple is one of them. The white film may be from the soaps and other stuff people use in the shower.

Does the paint dry to it's original color? But just has a white film on it?

Dark colors in a bathroom are.. well, hard. I'd make sure it's dry and clean and put a clear glaze over it. Even a pale blue will look funny when wet.

Repaint it, and tell your customer to not have long hot showers til the paint fully cures. A better exhaust fan wouldn't hurt anything.

There actually can be a problem with dark shiny colors in a humid bath
Was it actually "Bath" paint that was applied?
Find out exactly what paint was applied

A new, proper CFM exhaust fan properly vented may help a little, as might an actual K&B paint (if you can get one tinted as dark as you need)
