Baby Furniture.....cribs

I have a customer that is going to be re-finishing two cribs himself, and wants my recommendation on products. Problem is, I don't paint furniture usually, and there's the issue of what's safe to use on a child's crib. I know one of the cribs is stained and poly'd, so he'll need to sand 'er down and prime them....but what for topcoats? I know a good alkyd primer will be the best thing, but the finish I don't want to say because of children possibly chewing on it, etc. Any ideas appreciated.

I didn't do the research, but going online to SW, BM or any major paint supplier and checking the msds will reaveal paints suitable for use in the food industry. That should work.

What about milk paint?

nah j/k I think a high quality enamel would be fine but make sure he let's it dry for a long time before he uses it- to get rid of any odors and so it hardens nicely. Have him call whatever brand he uses 800 number and ask them if it's okay for cribs also. Muralo superfinish may be a good choice cause it can take a beating well maybe even top-coat it with ZipGuard.
I dont like the product much but ZipGuard acrylic would be safe bet for the poly- They even say non-toxic if ingested on the can! Just my 2cents

Id have to agree with laquer/enamel.. that's what the factories use anyhow, if it's completly cured I don't think there would be a problem.

Make sure to paint it a bright color, so if the tyke does chew some, you can see it easily.

Thanks guys. I didn't even think of food grade paints. I just wanted to be sure before I recommend something to a parent that is concerned about what their child might eat!

Ahh whatever, I ate lead when I was young! Tomorrow they will tell us that latex is bad for you and causes tooth rot and stomach cancer in rats... let the baby chew laquer!

Re: Baby Furniture.....cribs

I would use this stuff:

Approved for food prep areas, I've used it for years for my food service clients
Its also really easy to clean
(I can also recommend it for walls, especially under chair rails, in commercial rest rooms )

Hi,
I only suggest you that what ever you use on the crib make sure that it does not contain any kind of toxic chemicals.. After all the baby health matters a lot.. There are so many paints available in the market which are eco friendly and does not harm the baby..

I would contact the manufacturers and get something in writing from them as the recommendation.
