Anyone Use Epoxy Wood Stain On Deck?

There is an epoxy wood stain made by EFY. It is a synthetic product and suppose to be garunteed to last 2-3 times longer. Any experiance with this? Or any recommendations?

First thing that comes to mind is a major concern to me. Epoxy chalks when left out in the sun. I'd have to look into this and see if it's a true epoxy or a an epoxy-ester coating. We've sold epoxy-ester driveway coating for quite a while now and they do outlast most acrylic floor products but still don't have the hardness and longevity of similar oil products.

Here is an example of one of the 25 year guaranteed sealers ONE YEAR after it was laid down. Nice huh?

I haven't seen Defy in the field but, here is my problem. When you ask the company to send you pictures or give you references from people that have 6-7 years experience with this stuff, they dummy up. Why is that? Because there is no one. Unil Defy has been around long enough to substantiate its claims, I remain skeptical.

Products like Rhinoguard and Seal RX end up like the picture (not sure which of the two it is)

You can't strip these products off. That to me, makes maintenance impossible.

I've never heard of these guys.

http://www.saversystems.com/Product%...eets/epoxy.pdf

http://www.saversystems.com/MSDS/epoxy.pdf

First, since it is a waterborne product, the epoxy has to be solid epoxy resin particles suspended in water OR an synthetic resin with 2-3% of epoxy silane. I'm guessing that the synthetic resin is an acrylic... lol... The aqua ammonia in the msds is there to adjest the pH... while there are other possibities... this one reeks of cheap acrylic with a pinch of epoxy...

So, while I am not certain... AND... epoxy silanes do add to performance, I'm guessing that this is a marketing gimmick... You'll notice that they stress not to put it on thick... they want it to soak in... the less on top of the surface of the wood... the less chance of chalking... They can make the claim of longevity since the material below the surface of the wood would remain intact. However, I would expect what is on the surface to look like crap! I don't see anywhere where they say it will look good... just be protective (defined as protecting the cellulose beneath the surface)...

I've used it before, and it works quite well. In fact, I used this product: http://www.thehardwarecity.com/?sku=6210710
It works better than other stains I've used. I might need another can soon, actually.

Re: Anyone Use Epoxy Wood Stain On Deck?

I'm a handyman, but I didn't want to do this myself so Certified Contractors Coalition sent us some guys to give us estimates on our deck and fence cleaning and staining and we ended up (reluctantly) going with the high priced guys that use Plastiron stain. To be honest it looks like normal stain until you get like 3 feet away from it and then you see lots of sparkles that look like glitter. Other than that it looks like plain ol stain. I hope the glitters make it last as long as they say it will. Time will tell.
