Anyone Know What They Are Charging In Boston?

I got a high end house in Newton to bid soon..... without seeing it.... just going to bid by the day... I live near Worcester ma. so drive alone will be an hour each way.. and with traffic that could double.... I was thinking around $500 or so a day just for me.. and double my helps wage..... residential repaint... and If they are are happy... I get the beach house in the Cape next.
Any suggestions...fire away!

I lived for years on Long Island where even a twenty five mile trek to the hamptons took between an hour and hour and a half. In upstate Ny now i still do hour trek at least once a week. I cant do 5oo bucks worth of work in a day, if you can, more power to you. With your helper your looking at 700. a day. I dont have a big enough set to ask for that. Let us know what number you do float at them and if they go for it.

First, do not count on the next house they are "promising" to give you because that is usually a tactic used by homeowners to try and draw down the price. If I even hear that come out of a homeowners mouth I walk away because it usually is started out by saying"give me a good price and..." Also, the next time you get a homeowner who wants a cheapo price ask if they will be ok with the cheapo quality. $500 a day plus double your helps wages plus materials or they have to provide all the materials.

What's wrong with asking for $700/day? If that is what it takes to cover his expenses and still allow him a paycheck and profit, then that's the price they'll have to pay if the want to hire our friend Mr. Kelly.

I am so far beyond worrying what to charge someone. Just put your numbers together and give it to the customer. You can't get it if you're afraid to put it out there. Be confident and let it be clearly known you expect to earn their business AT THAT PRICE. Act like you know they're going to use you regardless of price because you are the best choice. If they don't jump on it, look at it as they are the one's missing out on your level of quality and service.

This attitude has done me wonders over the past couple years.

Your gonna bid without looking at it??? Is it them saying high end.? Boston union is about $30 an hour. What I see in help wanted is closer to $20. I go through Newton on my way to Boston on 90. Nothing looks high end from there! LOL...be warned, in the morn, traffic jam starts a few miles from 95.

Bid by the day. That, to me, means your daily rate + extra gas. On the job should be T&M, period.<---- this is the only way it will work out financially for you.

So, $500 for you per day sounds totally fine. It's enough to cover gas and some extra hassle. As far as your help, can't help much there--I work alone.

Good luck man, sounds like a potentially good deal. I would be putting in 10 hours a day for work and travel, to make it worth it.

Have fun on Route 9! Charge a few extra dollars for lunch--hard to find a cheap spot in the area. If you go to the home creapo in west roxbury, leave your helper in the van or stuff will be missing.

4th generations soo right... never again...(I said last time) will I take the next house promiced litterally.... Now.. if the drive is an hour without traffic... I'd say an hour and a half each way... does that come off my eight hours of the daily pay? I do alot of travel jobs... but never drive back and forth...always stay there..so this part is new to me. And I've decided to meet with the owners at the house first to bid correctly.

I would bid it cost plus meaning what you want per day for you plus your helps pay and travel time. The pluses should be gas, driving time and paint as well as any supplies it takes to complete the job. I do have a question. I am not from your area, but I was thinking why does this person just hire someone from his area? The only two answers can be that he is so cheap and ran out of contractors or he has had his name passed around as a hard to work with customer. I do not know about up North, but where I am from there is a paint contracting grapevine and I live in a city of one million plus. If he just simply lives in a town where there is no quality contractor then he should be willing to pay for the craftsmanship. Go boldly to the estimate, not bowing.

The area (Newton) is mostly Jewish with very high incomes. I use to work in the area, very tight nit-however once you are in, you are in. Does raise a red flag that they would not ask their neighbors or someone at temple for a painter. FYI, study up a the culture a little, no working on Friday after sundown and Satudays are out.

No, No,No... the homeowners were at a friends house (masion) last week and met my dad who mentioned I was a painter.. they mentioned that they needed their whole house done...so thats were I come in....

The house they were at are friends of mine, they own a large amount of shopping plaza's.. their house is at least 4 mil.. and they have residency in the Caymon Islands.. so I think the jewish couple has cash..... I've got their email address and will send my porfolio to them and take it from there.
