Anyone familiar with Sidewinder?

Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this place. I'm a one man show and my specialty is carpentry, not really painting, but I recently started my own contracting company and am doing a lot myself.

Well I just built some nice wood columns on a porch and my supplier told me I just HAD to use sidewinder to caulk it, that all the big boys were using it and it was just the sh!t. He said to use it for everything even the nail holes. I asked if it flashes and he said no.

He's never given me bad info before but the stuff flashes so bad I can't leave it. I've given it 3 coats and the paint looks great but the flashes are horrible. The customers are happy but I'm not, so I wanted to see if anyone is familiar with this product and could give me some advice on how to get rid of the flashing. It's mainly the nail holes in the field. The corners and gaps are fine.

Thanks everyone.

Next time fill the nail holes with putty or spackle, not caulk.

As a general rule, salesmen don't actually use the stuff they sell you, so any recommendations from them are suspect
The advice to caulk the nail holes was painful
And just because there are builders out there doing it, doesn't mean there's not a crapload of painters that are pissed off and fixing their messes...and now charging them more to do so

The only thing I can think of is to spot prime the flashing with something good, and re-paint

It shouldn't really need the primer, another coat ought to do it, but I wouldn't take that chance
Nor should you

As painters caulk and putty, next time ask them for caulk/putty advice

You're going to have to go back and dig it out of every single orfice you put it in. That stuff is like kryponite.

Just kidding. You can probably get away with sealing with a primer, I would try getting some spray cans of kilz or other primer recommeded in this forum and shoot each one. Touch all the spots with paint, let dry and then go over it a second time. Should do the trick.

Suppliers have an interest in selling certain products at certain times.
Never let them tell you to fill holes with caulk.

Man, you scared me there for a sec..

Thanks guys, I was hoping you'd say that. I was worried that I'd prime and repaint and still see it there and then hear "oh, you should have used this special stuff meant for sidewinder" or something like that.

I learned my lesson about trusting my suppliers without first checking up on it.

You guys are great, I can't believe I didn't look for something like this forum sooner. Thanks.
