Am I Slow?
I cut in w/o tape at about 15 minutes/12 foot wall. That's counting up and down the ladder. Am I slow? I know it looks good when it's done. Also, I recently tried rolling on with a tiny roller for second coat just getting close to the line. Anyone else do that? looks OK to me.
Thanks, cindy |

Re: Am I Slow?
Never tried with a roller, just brush work - as for being slow if your new to the trade, no you will get quicker, if your old hand then.........

Just tell them a whole lot of BS. AND "It's not I what I do, It's what I know, that's what you pay me for".

Re: Am I Slow?
Cynthiann,
IMHO, I would rather pay you to go a little slower and get a good job than someone else that is faster but does inferior work. It does sound a little slow, but then who cares, its the end result that counts. As you gain expeiance, you will pick up speed and learn easier ways to do things, especially if you leep reading these forums, they are a wealth of knowledge. To be truthful, I have actually gotten slower at cutting in as carple tunnel problems and arthritis take over. As I've gotten older, I can't keep a steady smooth motion in my arm anymore to. I have never tried a mini roller to cut a wall on the second coat, I usually take the time to do a real good job on the first coat, and cut within a 1/16" to 1/8" of the 1st coat edge on the second coat.

If you can cut a great line a little slower than another cuts a sloppy one, I'd rather have you working for me

Re: Am I Slow?
Thanks guys...I feel a lot better now. I've only painting for a year now so I've a lot to learn about effenciency. It's hard to learn about painting cause it's not exactly a textbook kind of subject. You have to watch and learn. I'm lucky in falling into this field because I completed the art program in college. I'm familiar with the feel of all the different 'media', i.e. paints, caulk, spackle. It's the particular of going faster that was killing me, but evidently there's no magic time savers other than good prepping, clean tools, and good scaffolding. All of which this site has helped greatly.
Thanks again, cindy |

You are very correct, the prep work is half the battle. And don't forget good tools. I always get a kick when a client asks how I can paint such a straight line when they can't. I ask them how much they spent on their brushes. They tell me they bought a 4 piece kit for $8.99 at K-Mart. I tell them I spend $25 on a single brush... Don't give up hope, you will get better and faster with experiance, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Re: Am I Slow?
You're slow to me...but I've painting over 7 years and I can fly while producing a perfectly even sheen and razor sharp lines. Does it matter? Not really...if you are getting paid well for your time, however long that is, then all is good. If you're pleasing customers and building your reputation as a consumate professional, I'd say nothing's wrong.
Now, if you were working for me, I'd be cracking a whip at you, lol!! Take for example today...I rolled about 600 sq. ft. of wallspace in about 8 or 9 mins flat. I cut in a whole master bedroom and bathroom in 20 mins, then rolled it out in another 5-10 mins. Moving fast doesn't have to mean being sloppy or leaving a mess. The speed will come with time. I was slow as molasses going up-hill in freezing weather when I started painting, but I had some good mentors that pushed me for speed at every turn.
