Alterative To Ceosote

I have been asked to recoat a cedar shingle sided house that was coated 5 years ago with crosote. The new owners want to use a more user freindly product. Anything out there that is not so scary to use?

Re: Alterative To Ceosote

Oh boy...you're going to need to completely strip the creosote from the surface, but creosote. That is a serious danger to the environment, and stripping it will cause it to run off into the water supply. This customer might have shot themselves in the foot with creosote. I would test an area with a good stripping product like Timber Strip Pro to see if it comes off. I'm not so sure it will, I've never run across that before. If you can get it clean, remember, you're dumping that stuff right into the ground water, and that's a serious environmental issue. Creosote is BAD stuff.

An alternative would be any quality penetrating oil finish that provides good UV protection, water repellence, and is mold resistant. Penofin, Ready Seal, Wood Defender....any would have been a MUCH better solution, and looked 100x better.
