Advice On New Work Truck.

buying a new(used) work truck... have 2 choices

2000 dodge 1500 4x4 white 37,000 miles automatic
8ft bed / new tires / ladder racks & tool boxes of my choice
$11,900 4 yr loan $350 a month... kinda high 17% interest
drove it, big, very nice, comfortable, power evrything, a/c

2003 ford f-150 xl white 48,000 miles standard
6 ft bed / kinda basic / racks or cap of my choice
$8,000 haven't drove it yet, more affordable

Any suggestions?

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

I like basic and affordable myself
I bet that Dodge was nice though huh?
That's over 30% more though

I do all my own maint. so it'd be the F-150 for me
Easy to DIY the repairs

Personally I would want the Dodge 4X4. The problem is that kbb retail value in my area for that truck is $9500 so the price is about $2000 to high and WHY 17% interest. No way I would pay that kind of interest.

The 2003 ford has a retail value of $12,500. I would want to know why the dealer is willing to sell it $4,000 under kbb retail. I personally would not want the 6ft bed. If you don't need an 8ft bed and there is nothing wrong with the truck it looks like this truck would be a much better value.

Because Dodge's are hot right now and he can get over book for it
Same goes for the Ford, Dodges are hot right now so it's harder to sell a Ford, so the $ goes down

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

Since I promised myself years ago that I would never own another Dodge product my vote would have to be for the Ford.
Also, I have had Fords for years, and really no serious problems with them at all.
My one Dodge I owned .... holy crap what a POS.

john, at -30 I believe that it all boils down to the battery. I have a few friends from the Korean war that say that they never shut vehicles down in that kind of weather.

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

Thats for sure. Especiallyi if your truck wont start on the first turn over The carb/choke has alot to do with it as well for older trucks and if you have to shut your truck off at minus 30 ahh time for a new truck. At -70... thats a different story. I just plug in anywhere from 0 to 30. Past that it goes in the garage.

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

Mileage and interest rate on the Dodge bother me. That's very low for a 6-7 year old truck and just seems wrong.

I'd get a carfax on it, or contact the state it was last registered in and check the mileage with previous owner if possible (if you're buying from a dealer).

If your credit is good, you can beat that interest from your bank or savings and loan. Check with them.

I've owned Fords since 1982 and have driven Chevy, Ford and Dodge vans and pickups as old as 1949 and and new as 2006, but I still buy Fords.

The Ford seems a touch high mileage for a 3 year old (prolly 4 really), but reasonable. I have a 1992 Ford F150 for my daily driver with 93,000 on it and it still runs like the day I bought it. Still gets 13MPG (which stinks), but doesn't really show its age.

One other thing to watch out for. There have been several thousand cars and trucks underwater in the last couple of years, and you can bet they are not all in the scrap heap. I'd research that used truck like no ones business. Last thing you want is a water-logged work truck, especially if you didn't drown it yourself.

I've got a 2001 Dodge 1500 and I am swearing I'll never own another. It might just be the one I got , but the suspension is crap. It feels like I'm driving the truck Slickshift posted above.

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

If you want to splurge, and you have vinyl seats consider getting some nice seat covers. When I got my new ride, I found out the seat fabric stains very easily, so I got a plush black sheepskin seatcover from one of those auto stores, and I absolutely love it. It makes the seat feel real good, and it keeps it clean, and looks nice too.

I think you'd like that as well, and they don't cost too much either...

Re: Advice On New Work Truck.

I recently bought some seat covers for my new truck. Custom tailored for my specific make/model seats, they fit like a glove. You can take them off and wash them, etc. Great deal for $130 which included shipping.
I got them here, and they are called Covercraft Seat savers.
