Acrylic/latex Difference?

I have seen this debated somewhere, but would someone explain the difference if any? I tend to think of them as the same.

Re: Acrylic/latex Difference?

Latex is just a generic name for water based paints. 100 percent acrylic latex paint is much better than say vinyl acrylic latex paint. The acrylic is just the polymers used to make the product.

Re: Acrylic/latex Difference?

The industry in whole I think idstrying to get away from the term latex. Which I think is good since I don't believe paint has any latex in it really any more??

Re: Acrylic/latex Difference?

They both refer to the resin used. Latex is more general and does donote that it is water based. Acrylic is a specific type of latex.

There are also different types of acrylics...vinyl, 100%, styrenated.

Re: Acrylic/latex Difference?

Latex resins (rubber) was used in the 40s and 50s and the name stuck. CA paints still use a small amount of latex resins in some of there products.

Again, latex refers to the resin, waterborne refers to the solvent.
