3 Coat Floor Paint

I have a job where my designer is wanting a 3 coat sanded floor finish in a bedroom of house, we will paint directly on plywood subfloor with a basecoat, then go over with two other colors, then sand so all three colors will be exposed.

Does anyone here have any experience with this type of application and can you give me some advice on how best to approach this job.

I have never tackled this before- thanks

Re: 3 Coat Floor Paint

Never done that before but what immediately comes to my mind is that putting down 3 colors and then sanding right away will probably cause the paint finishes to gum up or ball up because of the softness still with them...there is a curring time for paints to fully harden...

maybe you can talk her into putting the 3 colors down but in between coats randomly lay down odd and different shape stenciles overlapping them with each coat so you still will get an effect of seeing the three colors but eliminating the sanding... do 2-3 coats of each color so you have more of an effect and its completely random... do you have the vision of what I'm talking about... I think that actually would be a neat looking floor....

I must be missing something here.
What's gonna keep the plywood joints from cracking through?
Or will that be a "design feature" in her creation?

Re: 3 Coat Floor Paint

Plywood will be left as is, no covering seams or fasteners, we will pull up existing carpet which was installed last year to do this, owner of home is a designer and they also have me working with another interior designer on job, owner of home has a guest home in another state that contractor painted subfloor in kitchen as I am trying to do. it looked like a red and yellow base coat, then they painted black&white checkerboard-2-3' squares, when sanded through it looked kinda neat, distressed is something they love, home I am working on was actually a barn converted to a home, Hand hewn beams etc. Owner is very wealthy, so I guess that's why I get all the fun stuff

How would you like two have TWO interior designers as bosses??

Tell the designers that you need to use thinned coats of flat enamel paint.

The flat will be sandable sooner and won't gum nearly as much as a sheen. Try not to create heat by sanding too fast. Then cover it all with waterbased clear coat. 'They'll think it's fabulous'
