Elevators

We are on a job for a motel and it has an elevator. My question is what is the height requirement for recepts and j-boxes in the sump area?

Re: Elevators

A call to your state elevator inspection agency will answer that question better for you. The answer may vary from state to state. Or question your elevator installers.

Re: Elevators

Ask the elevator men...they will know exactly where the collision will be between box and car ~ and they don't want that.

Re: Elevators

The elevator usually comes no where near the bottom of the sump with quite a bit of clearance on all sides (bar landings).

Re: Elevators

They(elevator guys) need to have an EMO down there. Ask em where they are putting it and set your stuff accordingly.

Re: Elevators

I would do a RFI to the GC and let him get the info. I have done two lately and we put them at 24" aff. on the right side as you enter the pit. All waterproof boxes. You will also have to have a light and a light switch in there too. If you have to get the info call the elevator guys.

Re: Elevators

In my experience with elevators here in Maryland I used to put the receptacles and lights about 12"-18" off the pit floor. Smokes and Heats depend on the sprinkler head location.
When your in the elevator pit you will see the steel stop with the springs around it. This is the lowest the elevator will go. everything in the pit , lights, receptacles , heat detectors, smoke detectors, and J-boxes must be below this level. Also keep in mind to look up beside the elevator car for the rubber power cord that runs to the car, try to arrange things so this will not get caught. The light switch is mounted 48" from the elevator lobby floor and within reach from the open elevator doors and must be mounted on the same side as the pit access ladder. You can not run anything behind the ladder either. Pit receptacle and light can be on the same circuit. Receptacle must be GFCI protected but the light can not be on the load side of the GFCI. Reason is trip the GFCI you would be in the dark.
Keep in mind everything under 48" of the pit floor requires weatherproof compression fittings, weatherproof lights and weatherproof receptacle covers
