What Are Pools Made Of?

i have a few questions about pools...


What type of material are pools made of? What kind of paints are used on pools.

Reason for asking is becuase i have potential client that wants the paint blasted off his pool.

its a 20x40 (havent seen it yet, but thats what im told.


BTW, i wont recoat the pool, only blasting to be done.

btw if your a "blaster" I'm sure you can find plenty of work through pool construction & service companies. who are qualified to drain & maintain an empty pool for you.

generally, painters etc, should steer away from painting ig pools. reason being the draining & maintaining of an empty concrete pool requires specializied skill & equipment. it is not uncommon to find the pool in a high water table. while empty the pool has the potential to raise out of the ground or crack. we avoid this by drilling through the shell & relieving hydostatic valves....
I highly doubt your insurance covers pool movement & cracking. I don't think it worth risking taking a hit for pool demolition & replacement. if you do this job, ill walk you through it.

What exactly is this? Im guessing its something i cannot do.



I think the blasting part would be easy, i would treart like concrete.

I didnt think any other procedures were necessary, i guess i was wrong.

the chances are 50/50 depending on the jobsight.

I shoot holes into every one I drain. half the time I need them, to relieve hydrostatic pressure.

DO NOT get into taking liability for an empty shell.



if you're working as a sub for a pool co - let them worry about the draining.


if you're working for a HO - let them worry about that

i took a look at the pool, pool company already drained...prepped

i only have to blast.



Ray, do you know what others in your area charge to blast?

Also i think i may need some help calculating the sq.ft of this pool..

I hear 1400-1700 average. then you have to see more for a spa or anything else. I assume these are repaints not plaster jobs.

Ray, i have to assume its a full plaster job because they chipped the entire surface of the pool (assuming you know i what i mean by chipped right)

it depends if you're pricing by surface area (of water) or by actual surface (i.e. walls and floor)


if those measurements came from measuring the perimeter - you've got a per of 96 lin ft

as a general rule, (in my opinion) - something with a perimeter like that is going to be around 500 sq. ft.

NOT ALWAYS - just in general.

now - your depth is going from 3 to 9 (avg depth - 6 ft) - the actual surface-surface area is going to be around 3000

figuring in the stairs would be nominal at this point.


like i said - depends on how you're pricing. I look at water surface area. So I'm never concerned about walls (unless im figuring out gallons of water)

I take the longest & widest point to fig sqftg. granted the figure will be high, but that's my tip$$$!!!!

& besides that's how they charge us for covers.......

I don't think sqft is a good way for you to price.... just price yourself a nice chunk, if you can show up you will get the work.
this is a luxury biz.

Ray, you are right, i wish i had the experience on how price it out right, but since its my first pool, i kinda need a guide on how its priced. After this job, i'll know exactly.

im not sure if can say that, i matched a competitors estimate. I know some people will say i shouldnt have, but when you think about, its my first job. i have no clue how to price it and what to expect. If i win, i win, if i lose, i am willing to accept it.

bad thing about matching a competitors price (on first several jobs)

they've already learned to be systematic and efficient ... know what i mean??
