Salt?

Ok pool guys, I have a question, I was lounging in my hot tub, 1988 model, that i still keep working...and I was thinking about the ozonator that quit.....so if pools have salt systems that work, why not hot tubs, and it would have to be better on the skin then chlorine...so what do i need and what do you think? This is a DIY post, but I am not asking what to charge myself Dirt!

Re: Salt?

We install a lot of salt systems on pools, but haven't had good luck the few times we tried it on spas. There isn't a salt unit made just for spas that I know of, so we tried using the smallest pool unit and running a lower level of salt, but it over chlorinated the spas which made them unpleasant to use.

I think it would work fine on a spa, but the cost of the unit would be too high.

I have ozone on my personal spa, and salt on my pool, and the ozone works great.

Hope this helps.

Re: Salt?

We used to do brominators, but owners never maintained them properly, so we just put in the little "floaters".
You unscrew the cap and put in some bromine pellets and toss it back in.

Re: Salt?

Yes joasis, the make a salt generator for hot tubs. I forget the name of the make but they just put bromide salt in to create Hypobromus Acid instead of regular salt (creating hypochlorus acid) as in pool applications. On another note I have read a study which states ozonators in hot tubs can be hazardous to your health. The ozone comes out of the water and sits in a space between the surface of the water and 12 inches above the surface (the space your head is in). I don't recomend them for hot tubs.

Re: Salt?

Balboa Instruments does make a salt generator for spas call Eco-Spa. I haven't used one but Balboa makes quality products.

Re: Salt?

heres my two cents-
water chemistry in hot is really hard to maintain because it is such a small body of water and the heat. The heat opens up the bather's pores and allows for more organic wastes to contaminate the water. The reason why ozone and bromine are more popular for use in spas and hot tubs is because they as sensitive to the water chemistry.
to address the concern with ozone true you do not want to inhale a lot of it. but - ozone has a very short half life so if the ozenator is shut off when the jet pump is turned on there is no issue.
as far as bromine salts go - they are used as one part of a two part sanitizing product one company calls Bromine salts Enhance and calls the oxidizer release
The must popular way to sanitize a hot tub today is ozone.
