Re: Sad Story About Pool Drains

I'll give this story about 12 hours before everyone forbids their kids from swimming in pools. All public pools will have to call the pool guys for safety inspections and the beaches will be over crowded.

Imagine being 6 and having to eat via an IV for the rest of your life?

Is a safety vacuum cutoff something you pool guys market or would the customer have to request it?

Re: Sad Story About Pool Drains

i install antivortex covers and instead of one main drain - i install two of them -
reason is that if anyone ever would go fully lie or sit on one drain, the adjacent drain (that is not "covered") would start pulling.

and yes, there are such mechanisms/sensors that will shut a pump off if some type of entrapment occurs.

Is it that common for people to get hurt swimming, in particular getting their guts sucked out their asss?

Re: Sad Story About Pool Drains

they will hang the agent from the health department, who missed this one at spring commercial inspection, service company (if any) & builder are protected by grandfathered codes...
if maintained by golf club staff, they have some answering to do......
hell everybody's getting sued here. but it will stick on health department.

I realize that but it's something I myself have never heard of happening before so it's news to me and it's probably news to others that aren't in the pool business.

not common - but there have been many incidents over the past 50+ years

I'd say as common as people blowing up their townhouse complexes from using gas stoves

or falling off balconies

etc.

********

not just in this story - but people are so quickly to "blame" something ...

... when it's almost always caused by a lack of PARENT-ing

Entrapment is the main reason for the emergency shut off required at spas(hot tubs) in non-residential settings.

Re: Sad Story About Pool Drains

This is a tradgic story. The club should be watching these safety aspects, especially if they are maintaining the pools themselves.

As far as vacuum break devices...there are two approved units to choose from, of which one must be used by code in the state of CT on new pools with single suction points lower than 30 inches in the pool.(I beleive this is how the code reads). But a) the inspectors in small communities never mention them and b) them work to release a trapped person but eviseration occurs so quickly they are usless.

We has basically stopped using main drains with pipes leading to the pump or skimmer. If we use the (like on every gunite pool) it's only for a place to put the hydro valve to protect the pool. I have never put main drains in a pool which went to a pump that were not doubled up and minimum 3 feet apart. Now skimmers alone are the safest way to go and watch out when you and your family are in a public pool.
