I've always gone with a pool contractor and have never been disappointed. A man has to know his limitations.

Never did i mention I was going to construct a pool. I want to learn about the different finishes because since I started my sandblasting business, I want to know more about the surfaces.

In NW CT it's mostly gunite or steel/polymer walled vinyl lined inground pools. We don't work on aboveground pools, but they're here as well. Along with one piece fiberglass pools occasionally. Pick your type and if I can answer...I will.
I've never known a poolguy who didn't enjoy talking about all things pool oriented .

So basically after being excavated, the entire pool is lined with gunite? Then plaster and painted or just painted?
Steel wall im guessing you just paint correct? In a steel wall pool, is the floor steel also or is that concrete?

There is such a thing as a steel wall pool? I've been around pools my entire life and this is news to me. We see a few above ground and fiberglass pools but STEEL? Sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen to me.

this is just a basic outline of the different types of pool construction.
fiberglass shell,
hole is dug a pre-made fiberglass shell is dropped into the hole
steel,polymer walled vinyl liner
hole is dug to exact specifications walls are placed around the hole cement collar is poured around the aframes. floor is finished in a couple of different ways pool is back filled liner is dropped pool is filled
block or poured cement walled vinyl liner
the process is very much the same as steel or polymer walled pools
gunite pools
hole is excavated then lined with a paper backed steel mesh (steel tex) then the re-bar is added the pool is then shot with ether gunite or shotcreat. The pool is the finished with one of several different finishes such as marble dust, diamond brite, pebble tech, paint etc, etc. then the pool is filled.
Steel walled pools
yes there are steel walled pools I would venture to say that almost every pool that is in the top floors of a building is a steel walled pool. panels are welded together pool is painted then filled
please understand that this is an extremely basic explanation of the the different types of pools if you are look for something specific let us know and maybe we could be more helpful remember there are millions of ways to get from point A to point B.

Teetor-The steel walled pools in my area are lined with a vinyl liner. So the pool water doesn't touch the steel, unless there's a leak. I have replaced liners in 30+ year old pools and the steel is fine usually some surface corrosion.
Plazaman-Vinyl lined pools, usually have a vermiculit/portland cement base. Gunite pools are typically plastered when new. Painting most times comes down the road when the stains in a pool are to deep to remove and the homeowner elects not to put the money into plaster, painting is a less expensive alternative.
Nadtwins-nice thumbnail rundown .

Steel Pools
The pools in high rises and cruise ships are generally field welded stainless steel, either painted or with a bonded vinyl finish. The piping is usually welded stainless also, wouldn't want a leak on the 30th floor.
Chlorinated rubber pool paint is a good option for a homeowner. It doesn't last as long as epoxy paint, but it's inexpensive and easily applied.

I received an email the other day... I will see if I deleted it or not and maybe post it.
But is was saying there was a glass bottom pool, so you can put rock or leds or some type of designer landscaping under it.
Have you all seen that? or was it a hoax?
I would think the glass couldnt hold that much water.
