Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

If I'm guessing right the copper niche is a starite light. These are 120/240 so sould be no transformer needed and the deck box ain't got room to accomadate one.
You got my attention with "nichless light". Can you give me any more info bout it.

NICE. My guess would be to go for the 250 watt lamp at 120 volts to eliminate the need for a transformer (but I'd still throw a meter on the existing feed to make sure it ain't 240 volts). The customer will get more light with out costing more power and an easier installation means more money in your pocket.

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

one pita would be getting to the old conduit

(to cut from the existing niche)

although ...

you could use one of those little saws that cut on the INSIDE of piping

(ive seen em on TV before

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

oh wait - you're leaving the old niche then??

leaving the old niche and just putting a scrap of steel panel over it and THEN punching the holes for the new niche-less???

and then fishing the new cord with the existing??

(NOT splicing - but just fishing??)

one question --- did this start out as a leak detection job??

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

Does the light need bonding?

I wouldn't think so because you don't normally bond the light itself...just the niche.

I am assuming the old niche is already bonded from before on the outside.

Although the inspectors have been requiring a second bond wire pulled through with the light cord in the conduit and attached to a lug on the inside of the light niche.

Any one else have to do that?

Let me know.

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

I have no idea what a niche-less pool light is, as I've never seen one. Thus, my resistance to offer any input on this. The electricians that do pools in my area are normally employees of the pool contractor. I do maybe 2-3 pools a year, so they are far from something I'm competent on. Anything out of the ordinary, I have to look it up. Niche-less... I don't even know where to begin investigating that.

wall, bracket is also plastic

How does the cable get to a niche-less fixture? Is is supposed to just be draped across the deck, and down over the coping? Or, does it come in the back of the fixture, through a conduit, similar to a wet niche fixture?

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

the bracket is fixed to the wall through a plumbing bulkhead fitting,,

in this particular renovation the standard niche will be covered w/ sheet metal and punche to accept the bulkhead & brackets

Re: Copper Niche Is Shot

Is the conduit required to be continuous from the deck box to the no-niche fixture bulkhead fitting, per the fixture manufacturer's instructions? If so, I'm puzzled how you'll extend it from the back of the old wet niche to the bulkhead fitting?
