Construction dirt and dust in the pool...

We are finshing up the work around a pool that was completed before we starting to install patios and landscaping around it. We worked on this project during the winter. We covered the pools the best we could with a tarp. But do to the irregular shape of the pool dirt and dust from all the cutting inevidable made it into the pool. The pool is not open yet, but since its a light color plaster I am sweating the fact that there could be some staining. I know leaves got in the pool and there is some staining on the bench seats in the pool.

What kind a havoc could dust from the demo saws cause plaster in a pool?

I am hoping there is no proablems, but I just want to be prepared for the worst.

Having had EXTENSIVE experience with pools since 1972, LEAVES are what stain a pools bottom. And I do mean stained to the point of needing repaint. If the customer did NOT cover their pool with their cover, then you are probably in the clear. Sawdust and the like will not cause a noticeable stain unless it was in LARGE clumps.

Muriatic Acid is what should be used to scrub the coping and tiles.

Its not saw dust. Its dust from demo saws cutting the stone.

Should not effect the paint at all. May have left a ring but that should scrub off easily. Again Muriatic Acid.

Ruskent,

Wheather or not there is any thing to worry about will primarily depend on how long between the time it was plastered and the time the dust settled onto it. When the plaster is new it is soft and National Plasterers Council guidelines recommend brushing new plaster twice a day for 14 days. The first 28 days are when the finish is most suseptable to staining, scaling and discoloration.

So how long has it been has been atleast 28 days(or the whole winter)?
Then you should be fine.

Good Luck,
Scott

Scott brings up a point that never occurred to me. Since you went through a Winter and a dry pool is not a good thing in the Winter, I just assumed that there was water in the pool.........This could seriously change my statements!!!!!!!

Yes there is some water the pool. Pool company is coming to get the pool up and running this week. I think it just needs a good cleanning and alot of chemicals!

Hi Rusk,

Funny cause i just acid washed a Diamond Brite plaster finish pool today. Came out beautiful. Like what Poolman said its going to depend on if the plaster has cured and how long the dust has been sitting there. I would try TSP heavy duty cleaner first and a good power washing. If there are still stains then id try muriatic acid wash. Try a 1:4 mix acid to water first. Start at the deep end working your way up as you dont want to leave streaks. If there are still stains gradually increase the the acid to water ratio. Is it a colored plaster or white? If its colored you may have to acid wash the whole pool to get a uniform color. Diamond Brite (exposed aggregate) type plaster or regular white? Careful with the acid if it is an exposed product as you do not want to over expose it leaving a very rough finish.
