RotoZip And Laminate Counter

I have a counter job coming up and just ordered a trim bit for my RotoZip. Has anyone had any experience using this for trimming laminate? Any tips or warnings? I figure it can't be hard to master it for this. Except the small size of the base I figure it should do the job real well.

Re: RotoZip And Laminate Counter

yea i bought my roto-zip a couple years ago just to do a countertop. I works well just do a test run on a hidden area or scrap piece first to get the depth right. the base being so small you have to make sure you keep it sitting flat.To help the trim bit last longer and make a smoother cut, I first make a rough cut with a 1/8" straight cut bit with bearing tip.

Bosch and Porter-Cable both make a one-hand router just for trimming laminate.
I bet you could rent one. I'd be scared of little bitty bearing, and little bitty base. You know it will only screw up on the last cut. A little $ for the right tool vs start over from scratch.

I have a router. Just figure it is so small and light it might do a good job. I will of course try it on scrap first to see how well it works.

Re: RotoZip And Laminate Counter

Well I finished the counter job and tried the RotoZip on it. It was a very good addition to the arsenal. Not a replacement for the router but a much appreciated addition. It was not hard keeping the base flat. I used it on the top edges of the back splashes, in tight spots, and free hand without the base. And of course on the outlet cutouts. It did a nice job. Just thought I'd pass on the experience.

I wouldn't use one for laminates, but why not?

Re: RotoZip And Laminate Counter

the laminate bits with bearing guides tend to freeze up sometimes, resulting in burning your laminate edge. I use the porter-cable bits without the bearing, I guess its just a tracing bit? I used to work in a cabinet shop and thats all we used, the owner gave me about 25 of them when we closed down so I'm not sure where you would get them now.
