Question Replacing Cabinet Doors and Drawers

I have a remodel that involves removing the old kitchen cabinet doors and drawers and replacing them with new.

The existing face, drawers and doors are MDF or Particle Board that is covered with Laminate.

The are 1970's contemporary, just flat solid doors with square edges.

I want to replace them with plain old contemporary flat solid doors that I can build and paint.

What material is best; MDF, Plywood, Solid Birch or Maple?

What is the best way to finish the edges?

Should I paint with Oil or Enamel?

ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

best to use solid stock. get 120 brd ft of poplar, surfaced and straightlined one side. edge glue your oversized panels and leave in clamps overnight. decide which hinge and overlay before you size the doors/fnts. you'll need a good belt sander, belts and lots of time. add 1 3/4 " cleats to the back side of doors and secure w/ one screw ea side. figure your cost @ 50.00 per door.

MDF or plywood would be far less likely to warp than solid lumber. With plywood you would have to edgeband the edges the mdf would just haved to be sealed if you do use solid lumber make sure you alterate the grain (cup). Don't forget it is going to take a lot longer than you think it will.
