Re-finishing/ Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Hey everyone! There is a local kitchen co selling pieces of all diff types of kitchen cabnits for close to nothing.. i have heard i could use a fine sander and sand them down then re-finish them or use a special primer and prime them then paint them... has anyone ever done this before?? i know its not popular because most people just buy new ones but these cabnits are all new... just different colors... suggestions??????? please dont suggest to stop being a cheap !

As long as it is not a 2K poly or an Acrylic, you can scuff sand with 320-400 and coat with dewaxed shellac. Then you can put almost anything on top of that. Grab a small cabinet, or a door or drawer front and do some tests. Should work well.

Nick, I wouldn't suggest you stop being a cheapdonkey !
You know what your time is worth better than I.

So you're gonna go sort through a warehouse storage area and pick through the piles of stuff to find some that will create a combination to FIT in the space on your project.

Well you have fun doing that.
and please, be sure to come back and post how it worked out for you!

Almost anything can be painted, whether it fits, or not!

I'm not talking about the factory paint. That's not going anywhere. I'm talking about the paint you plan on applying. If it doesn't have a good mechanical bond it will not stay on. Do the job right or you will be paying for it in the end.

No paint has a good mechanical bond. Elbow grease makes the mechanical bond. When you sand the surface you roughen it up. This is what the paint grips onto. If you don't sand the surface remains smooth and glossy. The paint will likely fail and have peeling/adhesion issues.
