Finding Investors To Startup Cabinet Shop
Hey all,
I'm wondering where some of you shop owners found the investors to help you get off the ground. I'm in the process of writing my business plan and hope to start sending it to some investors and a few guys I know around the industry, specifically former shop owners I have worked for over the years. Also, where to find all the statistics about pricing and cost and everything to put into the business plan? Thanks for all the help.

Re: Finding Investors To Startup Cabinet Shop
either start small with a small amount of money and grow or start larger with a larger amount of money.
Banks have all the money. Do I get this right? You want to go to former employers (future competitors) and get them to bankroll your new business? Where to get the information about pricing and cost? For a cabinet shop, and you've worked in the industry? What do you need to know? Do you need to know what it costs to own/rent a shop? Tools/machinery? Wood? As for pricing, do you know what cabinetry sells for, what you want to make? |

Re: Finding Investors To Startup Cabinet Shop
I'm going to have to agree with the guy above me:
(1) Either start small, take on one job and build them with hand tools if you have to. Use that money to buy materials for your next one. Basically "Bootstrap" the business, until you show enough demand to move it to the next level. The barrier to entry for a small cabinet shop is not that hard. (2) If you do want to start big, you should already have this knowledge. Know EVERYTHING about cabinet shops in your area, material costs, labor costs, finishing costs, prefinished or unfinished, face frame or full overlay. You need to not only know what you want to do but what everyone else is doing and why a builder should pick you over them. Maybe they use maple overlay interiors and you will provide plywood etc.

Re: Finding Investors To Startup Cabinet Shop
You might try going where cabinet makers
hang out, like here -- http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/ With apologies to Nathan, other places to look are The Oak, and Sawmill Creek though I haven't been to either one lately and those things tend to ebb and flow. Anyway you will probably find more specific information there, while this is still a great spot for "running a business" type tips.
