"I recently had a glass block window I took out and replaced with an acrylic block awnng window because several of the blocks were cracked. This also happened to be in a shower. There was double framing at the base and 1/2" of space between the header and the block. the cracked block were in the center of the unit. I know that it takes a lot to crack these things I wonder if it was thermal shock as they are not tempered"
I have installed quite a few glass block window panels in showers and tub areas (including my own house). I have yet to have a single problem with cracked glass or mortar, and I am in Canada - you know, polar bears, igloo's, etc!!
I wonder if it is the installation method used??
I have been prebuilding panels for the last 7-8 years and installing them on site with low expansion foam. The panel is self-supported the way I build them and the foam (I believe) allows for any minimal contraction and expansion in the panel itself. This way you do not have metal connectors which are attached to the framing running through your panel - each material is going to contract and expand at a different rate.
