Turning Polished Into Honed...

Hello,

I have a customer who was looking for a honed product for his floor, not wanting a high polish. He was originaly looking at honed limestones but fell in love with a polished marble. What is the best way to return the marble to a honed state? I know there are both chemical and mechanical possibilities here but I'm leaning towards the idea of doing it by hand sanding the surface with the proper product(diamond abrasive? what grit?). The floor is only about 75 SF and I'm thinking the tiles could be dulled to a honed surface in a couple of hours with some good old fashioned elbow grease....is this realistic or no?

Thanx in advance

Never done it but what about an automotive buffer and some white automotive rubbing compound? I'm sure that would work and the products would be locally available.

I've used that process years ago to finish edges on stone tiles and things like that.

one would have to be extra careful not to get swirls and spots that aren't consistent with both.

what you need is a small sand blaster to knock the glaze down to the honed look.

That was my concern too, keeping finish consistent which is why I was leaning towards hand sanding

Once you get past a certain point, you're only sanding on top of what's been sanded, and then the tile's finished. No way to oversand, unless you take it down to nothing, and it's easy to see if it's been undersanded.
