Tiling Over Marble???
I am currently in a remodeling job…doing over a kitchen. The house is on a slab, but it seems that the front entry to the house which is right beside the kitchen has a little drop on the slab surface for some marble tile that was installed (kind of unusual). The tile itself is about ½” to ¾” thick. That is not really the issue “yet”. In the kitchen area they put down the peal and stick stuff years ago…….there was little or no difference in the height difference between the two floors. My issue is that can I install tile which is going down in the kitchen and in the front entry over the marble? I have not really come into this type of problem before. I can get the marble up if I want to without much trouble, but it is an extra step I want to illuminate if possible. I guess that I would have to pour about 3/4” to ½” if I take up the marble to be level with the kitchen. There is a slight ridge where the kitchen meets the front entry………..my thinking was that if I could install the tile over the marble I would just hit that ridge with a belt sander since the marble is so soft and just “level” everything out with the spacing in the trowel when I put the thin set down for the tile. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tiling Over Marble???
ya, go nuts I guess
I'd have to look at it to really give ya advice but if you're really down for tiling over marble, go ahead you can tile over tile I don't recommend. I myself would rip it up. Mud the floor to appropriate level and then tile.

Re: Tiling Over Marble???
if you are confident that the marble is secure then it can be tiled over but it needs to be grinded with a cupstone to scarify the surface
then flattroweled with a good multi-purpose thinset let cure then tile good luck. |

Re: Tiling Over Marble???
TCA states that so long as existing tile is free of cracks and structurally sound, it's ok to tile over tile. Run a carborundum disk over existing to scuff glaze and any wax/grease/soot buildup. And tile right over.
Not a fan of a skim coat of thin set. And then thinThere are better materials for that purpose.
