Re: Tile Shower Pan

Over at the John Bridge Tile forum they have a cardboard box with Kerdi on the inside. Been maybe 5-10 yrs and no leaks. I imagine it's not the same water, but yeah, it's a good system. (with cardboard construction anyways)

Re: Tile Shower Pan

So at ths point, we have used a high quality penetrating sealer (multiple applications) the water seams to bead up well and we squeagy often after a shower. It is a double head unit, so at times we are in there for prolonged periods. Is there anything you guys think I can do at this point to minimize or eliminate the mold from becoming an issue???? Thanks Again, I will post some pics. as it truely did come out beautiful!

Don't get my started about plumbers. Over paid, half them don't give a hoot about what they are doing. Most don't think about how the finished products looks. Blah!

I guess Florida has stricter standards than other states.

The exception is that in a recessed pan, no vinyl, copper, or lead pan is required by code in Florida so if a Tile person installs a pan in a recessed shower, it is considered overkill, vapor barrier, etc. It's technically not a shower pan and doesn't require an inspection.

No code enforcement officer or inspector in their right mind would flag a job for that reason.

The first layer of mud is to slope the pan so it will not hold water since water builds up in the mud layer under the tile. Weep holes in the drain are usually required also.

Re: Tile Shower Pan

How much water really remains in a shower pan with effective weep holes and no preslope under the liner? It seems to me that gravity alone will pull the vast majority of the water out.

Every time one of my water buckets gets a crack the water level ends up at the same level as the crack. It doesn't need a slope towards the crack for this to happen.

When I do a shower start to finish it gets a preslope, mostly because I like the Goof Proof slope system and it requires you to use the pre-slope sticks to work at all but I don't turn down showers that are already lined and boarded that don't have a preslope. I just can't afford the loss of work.

I'm not one of them plumbers. I take pride in my plumbing work and how tidy it looks but i will agree that nearly all the plumbers i know are messy as hell and don't care about the final look.

Re: Tile Shower Pan

Without presloping the pan, the mud acts like a sponge and with regular use will stay saturated. Calcification can occur over time and ruin the grout and sometimes compromise the tile bond. One good measure we use is water guarding the mud to within 6 inches of the drain before tile. This is also very effective in inhibiting mold. Attention plumbers. How about tucking those corners inside the stud. The triple layer biuld out technique is not user friendly.
