Just thought it would be important if there's more efficient way of doing things.
And, you got your answer, Remove all vinyl or risk failure, it's very simple.

I guess you can see right through the stuff and tell what's under it or how well it's down, which really doesn't matter, find ONE of those manufacturers that will warranty their product over vinyl if it fails, just one.

They will find one reason or another that it was installer error, 99% of the time it is, so once again, roll the dice, is it really worth it?

Re: Tile Over Vinyl Pros And Cons

You came here asking for reasons why you should or shouldn't do it. People have stated reasons, the main one being that they don't want to take the chance of a failure and warranty something they are not comfortable doing. If you are comfortable tiling over vinyl than go ahead, that is your choice and you don't need anyone from here to hold your hand while you do it. I myself have seen multiply failures over vinyl and would NEVER tile over it, that is my choice. I would rather take the time to rip everything out and start fresh and know that the job is going to last and sleep good at night instead of coming to a forum to ask whether or not my last job is going to make it past the warranty date or not.
In the end it is your job and you can do it however you would like and put your name behind it.

Come to think of it.... Stripping shingles is a waste of time too. Just lay some more on top... now that's 'efficient'!

Installing a backerboard and installing tile is a lot different than installing tile right over the vinyl as tileguy7 was asking about.
