Shower Pan Price

I just got an $800 quote for a mud pan. I'll be doing all the framing and prep work. He'll be mudding the base and installing the liner. Quote is for labor and materials. I don't have any experience, but that sounds pricey to me. Oh yeah, shower is 3'x4'. Thanks

Re: Shower Pan Price

WOW1, There goes another price increase for me! The pan liner will cost you under $20 and the mud is about $15 per bag here, I'm guessing 5 bags or so but its been a few months and I would have to pull a file to check for sure. Thats about $675 labor price for a few 3 hrs of mixing mud and possible setting drain flanges.
I think!

Where are you located?

There's really not enough info to know what's being done for that price, to know anything one way or antoher.

For a pre-slope, plus liner installation, wall backers, plus mud bed... that doesn't sound that far off to me.

Re: Shower Pan Price

Hi Worm,

I does sound a little high? I wish I could get prices like that however.

But you didn't supply enough info to take a better guess what I might try to charge. First of all, in what zip code is this shower? Makes a big difference you know? First floor, second floor? Is there an attached garage to work from? Or is it a condo with no facilities? Is it cold there now or? Is this new or old work? and on .......

Then there is the labor market situation. You din't mention the drain. Is the new drain properly installed already? Sometimes we have to replace it which means removing and installing a new subfloor too. Lots of variables.

As far as 3 hours go....that's silly. It's going to take longer than that, not to mention the time he took to come look at the job, time to go get materials etc. When it's all said and done, he will take 5-6 hours, and therefore use up the entire day actually. Unless he has to do subfloor prep too.

Re: Shower Pan Price

I wouldn't do one for any less.

But hey.....WHAT SIZE IS THIS SHOWER? That would be important to know.

If you have no experience then I would suggest you do one - you'll be changing your mind about what it should cost.

I'd say that's way oversimplified. First you need to come in and float the preslope. Then you have to come back a day later, install the liner, and then float the pan, staying nice and level around the perimeter, and making sure it pitches nice and evenly (as well as adequately) to the drain. You also need to make sure the curb is such that it's waterproof, and prepped for tile.

In addition, you're taking on the responsibility that that pan will not only not spring a leak, but that the weepholes won't clog, that all water that gets into the pan will drain through those weepholes, and that the water won't puddle ANYWHERE on the shower floor.

That said, my price STILL isn't quite that much. For a standard conventional shower pan, I charge 30.00 a foot including materials, and that's just for the shower pan. The tile install is separate.

You should be passing on this cost to your customer aren't you?

Re: Shower Pan Price

O.K., I'm in CNY, small town between Syracuse and Ithaca. Job is on the second floor of a private home. Tile guy lives two minutes away. Drain is brand new, installed by plumber, to tile guys specs. All framing, curb, cement board and probably tile will be installed by me. The $800 price is for cement base, which he will make and membrane liner installed. At Bill Vincents' price of $30/ft., 12 sqft would only be $360, quite a difference from $800.

Yes, but I don't want them to be getting ripped off, either. That's why I'm on here asking if this price sounds reasonable.

Re: Shower Pan Price

I don't know of any professional tile installer that would let someone else install the backers.

I've come into jobs where the drywallers have already put it up. I tear it out and start from the studs.

You might be getting the PITA factor price.

If you're asking him to do this because you don't know how, but you're going to be the one installing the tile.... then don't be surprised at paying a premium.

I would have him do the tile but, he doesn't know if he could fit it in to his schedule. He explained the details of how he wanted everything prepped, so he could get in, do the job and get out.

Re: Shower Pan Price

Worm,

You're missing a few things. Is there going to be a pre-slope? How about the cost of all his materials? In a small town materials cost more and are more difficult to get. Maybe he knows there aren't very many qualified to do the job. If I had little or no competition I would charge more than I do now. It would be the right thing to do too!

That $30 per sq. ft. is OK only when I'm also doing the rest of the work. Doing only the pan uses up the entire day even though the actual work is about half a day. Plus he's supposed to make a profit after everything is paid for including his labor, materials and the other 50 things of being in business.
