Setting Tile In Concrete

quick little intro. ive been around tile for a while. I was a helper for a few years during the summer when i was in high school and then set on my own for a couple years. I quit doing it because i wasnt making any money just do home repairs and odd jobs. I am now doing more complete remodels and doing tile again. well come to find out after reading here im a hack or have been trained to be a hack to bring in the boss money. Thats why im here.

Ok im doing some tile in a basement below grade. this house was built about 20 years ago and had carpet installed. I am redoing the stairwell and putting a tile landing directly on concrete. typically do i need to do anything to prep the concrete setting 12x12 ceramic. Also sometimes when setting directly on concrete the grout can show staining how will i be sure this wont happen.

Another side note can someone update the mud thread. it says what the different types of setting compounds there are but does not explain why you would use certain ones for certain applications. im asking this because the only thing my old boss would use is versabond flex for everything oh and dare i say mastic for any wall

Re: Setting Tile In Concrete

You are not setting tile in concrete, rather ON concrete.

Pretty big difference.

Re: Setting Tile In Concrete

There is a ton you have not shared with us.

How big is the tile?

Has the concrete been painted?

Are there any cracks in the concrete?

Are you heating below the tile?

What is the time line for the project?

There are many variables that make for a good installation and many ways of improving on the everyday install. Once a client is informed of the options they can decide if they would like to upgrade to a warmer floor or one that can surpress tile cracking.

Good on ya for raising your game. This industry is full of mis information and less than ideal installation procedures. You'll find a wealth of information here onContractor Talk - many men like me hang out and pass on our experience and learn from our peers.

Re: Setting Tile In Concrete

Versabond flex is a fine thinset.

As the others said, we need more info.
