No Grout Tile

Hey, does anybody know any reasons for not butting tiles up against each other and not grouting? Besides the grout absorbing inconsistencies and holding things together nicely. Somebody asked me why they've seen tile installed butted on a fireplace, but not on a floor. I've seen it on a floor but I don't much like the way it looks. Just curious if there are any known technical reasons.

Re: No Grout Tile

butting tile may cause problems due to expansion/contraction

plus, it doesn't look right either butted against each other

Re: No Grout Tile

I would think that for sanitary reasons, you'd want the grout. How else would you keep crap from building up in the cracks? I know that local restaraunts get gigged on their health inspections all the time for missing/cracked grout when I look them up online.

Tile grout, like brick mortar is not there to keep the tile together, it is to keep them apart.

Sanitation issues.
Mold.
Mildew.
Insect infestations.
Cleaning issues.
Tile edge damage.

There's six good reasons right there.
