Laying New Ceramic Tile On Wall

This is my first post in here. Hello all.
I have a fireplace with the hearth level with the floor. I and going to install a mosaic type tile on the floor (about 20"x42") and on the wall around the opening. The thing is that the builder installed the basic tiles that came with the house flush with the drywall. They must have mounted the tiles to the block around the fireplace. Anyways, I really want to avoid removing the existing wall tile. I was thinking of mounting the new tiles over the existing wall tiles. There will be no grip between the the two layers. I was thinking of using a "mesh" tape; kind of like the tape used for taping drywall. I would adhere the mesh tape to the existing wall tile and then install the new tile. Does this sound reasonable?

Just use construction adhesive and go right over the tile skip the mesh. Use the tube specifically for tile. I think its brown and red

If you put some 'tooth' on the existing tile you could just use modified thinset which is a lot more user friendly and you won't have construction adhesive everywhere. Skip the tape.
