Try looking at schluter.com I've done several mud pans and since I discovered Schluter I'll never do another. You can by from an online supplier tileprotection.com for around $400 and have a far superior product when finished

Chek out the whole Reference Library (aka Liberry) over there... It's the go-to place for tile info.

As far as Schluter products go, I love the membranes and Kerdi drain, yet I still float a mud pan instead of using their foam tray. Mud is cheaper, very fast, makes up for unlevel subfloors, uncentered drains, and I can Kerdi it right away, just like the foam tray.

Do you still use the Kerdi drain. I also use the orange but use the whole system. I see the benefits of floating a pan. Would like to on my next job.

Re: How To: Mud Pan?

Sure I do... I just dont have a need for the foam trays. Most of my showers lately are neo-angles, so floating a small mud pan takes maybe 30 minutes. The next one in a few weeks is a tub replacement, and I'll still use mud with the Kerdi drain instead of the Kerdi tray.

Re: How To: Mud Pan?

I've always gotten by just fine with the Kerdi-pan (foam).

Here are some ways to NOT do a pan:

I'm with you!! I always do a mud base with kerdi drain - floors are almost always off level one way or another.

I think Splinter is a little quicker than me though.... it normally takes me about an hour (maybe a little more) to do a mud bed.

Re: How To: Mud Pan?

I'm not a tile setter but I always hired a guy that did the shower pans with fiberglass and resin on my jobs.
